In the spirit of the Festival of Love, the makers of the survival MMO Icarus (PC) have come up with something nice: All characters who were left behind on a mission or died due to bugs will be resurrected. MeinMMO reports to you about the Christmas miracle in the Steam MMO.
What is Icarus and how do you play it? Icarus takes place in a future where Earth is no longer habitable. Humans have tried to create a second habitable Earth and have ultimately failed. Instead, a toxic planet “Icarus” was created, where other life forms exist, but which is extremely dangerous for humans.
Now, you as the chosen one must descend to this planet to collect new rare materials. To do this, you land in each game session with a ship on Icarus and have a certain amount of time to spend there. The timer continues to run even when you are not playing. Therefore, you must return to your ship in time; otherwise you will be left behind and your character will die.
However, dying in Icarus is taken literally. The character can no longer be used, and you have to start all over again. All skills, talents, and levels of your hero are gone.
Developers show mercy at Christmas: 64,000 heroes resurrected
‘Merry Christmas, your left-behind characters have been resurrected!’ states the headline of the post from the Icarus creators, RocketWerkz (via Steam).
As some players complained, RocketWerkz worked on a tool to resurrect the lost characters, as stated in the post. They called on players to start Icarus and check in the character selection to see if they recognize a familiar face again.
A total of 64,000 characters were resurrected. The developers wrote in the post that it hurts when a character is lost just because bugs in the game cause it or because servers went down while on a mission.
Furthermore, RocketWerkz takes the blame and said that they probably hadn’t communicated clearly enough that characters really are permanently lost if they are left behind on Icarus.
If a player has further questions regarding the process or lost characters, the developers are always ready to talk with the affected player on Discord. They also added that characters deleted by the players cannot be resurrected.
In addition, the resurrection action is something unique for the people who may have lost their heroes due to bugs and other issues in Icarus. These issues should, thanks to hotfixes and patches, now be resolved.
What players are saying about the Christmas miracle on Steam
Under the post, players thank for the action and appreciate it. A few of them said that they actually forgot to log in, resulting in the mission time running out. Others, however, did not experience the mass resurrection themselves but still celebrated this little Christmas miracle. It is not something to take for granted.
Some posts demanded the complete removal of permadeath, allowing players to only lose what they achieved on the respective mission.
They find it unfair that the mission time continues to run when one is not playing. You are punished if you do not log into the game. That would not be the right approach for a survival game, especially if one has only a few hours a week to play Icarus.
