The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a new survival game that will be released for PS5 and PC. The launch trailer shows what the world of J.R.R. Tolkien has in store for you as a dwarf.
What kind of game is this? In this new survival game, you take on the role of a dwarf in the world of “The Lord of the Rings”.
Alone or online with up to four players, you must survive in the infamous mines of the Misty Mountains, explore and develop them to reclaim your homeland Moria.
Where will the game be released? Since December 5, 2023, you can play the game on PS5. It has already been available for PC since October 24, 2023, and a release for Xbox Series X/S is still pending.

What to expect: As the trailer shows, you can expect several features in The Lord of the Rings that make a good survival game:
- Character customization: You can customize your own dwarf in a very individual way. Throughout the game, you will also be able to further customize your dwarf with new equipment.
- Resources: To survive, you will need to gather resources, hunt, and ration your food. In the mines, you can mine ores or explore deep passages for possible treasures.
- Fights: There are also dangers lurking in the mines that you must face. Fight against dragons and orcs to make your homeland safe again.
- Building and forging: Build new camps in the old ruins according to your ideas or use your dwarven craftsmanship to forge new items and equipment.
- Exploration: In the deep mines, there are many places you can explore, including many old ruins and mine shafts. These procedurally generated areas promise a new gaming experience each time.
What are the reactions? The reactions to the trailer are quite varied in the comments (via YouTube).
Many are positive about the new survival game. For example, user CJ-ln5ov writes in his comment: “Nice to see that Middle-earth games still get a chance after the Gollum flop. This looks fun.”
The negative reactions seem to outweigh
In fact, few comments agree with this. At least it seems so, as you have to search a bit between the rather negative comments.
However, user Alsann2012 still expresses his joy that there is finally a The Lord of the Rings game with dwarves, and that this is a dream come true.
User jordanwilliams1447 writes among other things: “No idea why every The Lord of the Rings game has to have this cartoonish look now.” User x_Lucifena agrees that this would be quite disappointing.
“I love The Lord of the Rings,” writes user madmandan1000, “but it hurts to see what is happening to the franchise, with this and Gollum.”
