Tribes Of Midgard has had some rough months. The game has lost almost all of its players on Steam. Now the developers are trying to revive interest with a new approach. This all strongly resembles another successful survival game.
What kind of game is it? Tribes of Midgard was released in July 2021 and is roughly a mix of Valheim and Diablo. The game is based on Norse mythology, where you control a Viking.
You play a character who becomes stronger during game sessions, but only has one life. You accumulate progress for the next attempt – a so-called “Roguelite.”
The controls function like in an action RPG with isometric perspective (“top-down view”). With various classes, you try to achieve goals in story mode or play a free game in survival mode. Special features of the game include:
- Co-op and solo play for all modes
- various biomes to explore with different loot and enemies
- a crafting system to create weapons and gear
- various bosses with special abilities
In our collection, you will find everything you need to know about the Viking survival game.
How is Tribes of Midgard doing? Since its release, the player count of Tribes of Midgard has dropped significantly. On the analysis website steamcharts, the numbers look like this:
- 30,930 players at peak at release – only 809 today
- 9,719 players on average at release – only 291 today
- this represents a loss of over 97% of the player base on Steam
Tribes of Midgard is also available on PS4 and PS5, but we cannot make any statements about player numbers there. Nevertheless, the developers now plan to attract players again with improvements.
Survival mode will be more like Valheim – 2022 roadmap promises larger seasons
This is how Tribes of Midgard is set to change: For the upcoming major update, it has already been revealed that the survival mode will be revamped. This was the “endless mode” of Tribes of Midgard. You play as long as you can hold out against the dangers of the world.
With the new season, however, the dangers will be toned down, and the crafting system will be improved. Bosses will no longer appear but will be found in the world so you can kill them for their loot.
You start in a blank world, without a village to defend, but can build one yourself. New building components like stairs and decorations will be added so you can create real Viking houses and bases. This all strongly resembles the Steam hit Valheim:
Additionally, you will gain more freedom, similar to a sandbox. With an increase of the level cap from 10 to 50 and a new skill tree, you can learn more abilities than ever before.
You can choose the special “blessings” from all classes in Tribes of Midgard and have no limitations anymore.
What’s next? Generally, there will be no more small mid-season updates, but only large updates consistently bringing many new contents and improvements. To ensure these are good, there will be beta tests.
We do not yet know when the new season will start. There should be a test beforehand to incorporate feedback. In the coming months, more information about the updates and season 3 will come.
I, as a survival expert in the MeinMMO editorial team, saw potential in Tribes of Midgard from the beginning that the game has not utilized. Perhaps it can still turn the corner:
