In Destiny 2, a new feature for leveling gear is coming soon, which the community is hotly debating. How do the MeinMMO readers see this contentious topic?
What is this feature? Recently, Bungie presented in detail how they plan to retire legendary gear in Destiny 2. Basically, the changes mean that many of the weapons and armor will soon have an expiration date. Once this date has passed, the items can no longer be leveled up, thus becoming irrelevant for certain activities.
The topic is still hotly and controversially debated in the community – also here on MeinMMO. Therefore, we wanted to know from you in a survey, what do you think of the new leveling and infusing system?

This is how you voted: The MeinMMO survey ran from May 15 to May 18, and 1,630 of you voted diligently. Each reader only had one vote available.
The vote distribution looks like this:
- An excellent idea: 5.95 %(97 votes)
- Sounds good: 12.64 %(206 votes)
- It’s OK: 13.68 %(223 votes)
- It’s not good: 16.75 % (273 votes)
- I think it’s terrible: 50.98 % (831 votes)
The result shows that half of your votes find the new system not only improvable but also frustrating. It is also noticeable: the more negative the response option, the more support it receives across the board.
The middle ground of the responses is quite close together in terms of votes – all three options are around 12 to 16%. Only the two opposing poles show strong fluctuations: “excellent idea” with 5.95% and “I think it’s terrible” with 50.98% votes are the two extremes.
From the numbers, a negative tone clearly prevails. Do your comments under the survey confirm this, or does it look completely different there?
The new system kills your appetite for loot
This is what the negative voices say: Also in the comments under the survey, you often express that you are not particularly happy with the new system:
I don’t like this principle, especially since the timer for the “half-life” of the weapons starts from their release and not from acquiring them. This means that anyone who finds time for the old Redrix, Luna, or ritual weapons from the previous season during the summer lull will get a weapon that is only usable to a limited extent after an eternal grind.

In addition, there are more criticisms and concerns. These three aspects are what concern you the most:
- The grind for strong items loses a lot of its appeal due to the expiration date
- You don’t want to part with your beloved guns
- It particularly bothers you that weapons can be “reintroduced” from retirement and thus are supposed to be obtained again with only minimal changes (or just with new power levels)
But not much new will come. The weapons that “expire” will come back sooner or later, only to disappear again a year later.

Not everyone sees it so negatively
This is what the positive voices say: Surprisingly, more comments under the survey are favorably or at least interested toward the new system than the survey numbers would suggest.
For example, MeinMMO reader Der_Frek writes: “Not a big deal. Whether I’m farming Pinnacle Gear or new weapons for endgame activities is pretty much the same. In most activities, power level is not really relevant anyway. Thus, the weapons are not completely obsolete.”
Others readers agree and add that other games also use such a system. Lighningsoul even notes, “It’s basically the EXACT same system that was already there during D1 times.”
However, along with this comes a concern for many of you, namely how Bungie will implement the changes:
Limiting weapons to a usage period of one year is not a problem in itself. In most MMORPGs, it is common for weapons to be replaced by new ones with new content. The idea itself is not bad, but I believe Bungie will mess up the implementation again.
