According to the analysis page Superdata Research, online games accounted for about 60 percent of the total digital revenues in 2016. A large portion of these revenues comes from Free2Play games.
According to a study by Superdata Research, MMOs are the largest source of revenue in the area of digitally realized PC games. However, the term MMO is interpreted broadly and includes pretty much any game that is played online. Nevertheless, the figures are impressive, a total of 19.8 billion US dollars have been digitally generated in the area of online games in 2016. According to Superdata Research, this amounts to a good 60 percent of the total digital revenues from PC games.
The majority of these revenues actually came from the segment of Free2Play MMOs. This generated 1.9 billion US dollars in North America and a whopping 2.9 billion US dollars in Europe. However, the absolute lion’s share belongs to the Asians, as a hefty 11.2 billion US dollars were generated in Asia!
For Pay2Play games, it was only 1.4 billion US dollars in Asia, while the USA generated 580 million and Europe 642 million US dollars in revenue. Free2Play is still worth it, especially in Asia! In the subscription games, according to Superdata Research, older titles with a loyal fanbase – such as World of Warcraft – are at the top of the digital revenues.
