The MMORPG Guild Wars 2 has had a soft spot for cats for a long time. You can acquire these cute pets for your home instance and play with them. But now, gigantic cats are appearing all over the world, and their king has reached out to the players in a letter.
What happened? Since April 1st, gigantic cats have been appearing near capitals or special locations in Guild Wars 2. They do not influence gameplay, but they look incredibly nice and cuddly.
The cats come in various forms, including a black Halloween cat with a witch hat or a rather plump cat that seems to have been spoiled by its owner.
Moreover, the king of all cats has sent a letter to the players:
The potions have the special effect of occasionally causing cats to appear that grant you power. However, this appearance has already led to funny glitches.
Players praise cats and encounter funny glitches
How are the players reacting? Funnier than the actual joke are the players’ reactions. Many players gathered in front of one of the gigantic cats and praised them (in the video starting at 40 seconds):
In the GW2 subreddit, there were various threads praising the cat lords. Some suspected a takeover of world domination, while others expected wise future predictions from them, like those from an oracle. Anything is currently possible with the cats.
What funny glitches occurred? With the new potions, cats spontaneously appear no matter where you are. However, in the instance fighting the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik, this led to an absurd situation.
Since the Elder Dragon was supposed to appear gigantic, everything else in the instance was apparently depicted as extremely small. However, this does not apply to the new cats. They easily overshadow the dragon and thus appear gigantic in the screenshots.

ArenaNet bombards players with jokes
What other April Fools’ jokes were there around GW2? ArenaNet was generous with players this year. Alongside the in-game joke, corresponding patch notes were also released (via GW2 Forum):
- The names of world bosses now always get an addition like “the Second” or “Jr.” when they reappear. This is to clarify that bosses do not resurrect by magic but are actually their children.
- NPCs now complain about never being visited or called.
- Miniatures can now be sorted so that the cutest are on top.
- There are new special “reaction skills,” where you need to react faster the older the account is, because veterans are more experienced.
- All classes received funny skills.
Additionally, the developers released a trailer for the upcoming episode of the Icebrood Saga that was probably not entirely serious:
How long will the joke stay in the game? From the fun patch notes, it can be seen that the cats will remain in the game until April 7th. On April 2nd, they were definitely still present. So anyone who loves cats or just wants to try out Guild Wars 2 should log in quickly.
Presumably a week later, on April 14th, the Super Adventure Box will return to Guild Wars 2. At the same time, a change to the legendary equipment could also find its way into the game that has already generated a lot of excitement.
What other April Fools’ jokes were there in the gaming world? Not only Guild Wars 2 had some jokes in store. Other online games and MMOs also played tricks on their players. We have compiled 7 funny April Fools’ jokes for you.
