Fortnite: Battle Royale has the reputation of being particularly popular among kids and teenagers. Now it’s official. A study proves that Fortnite is particularly popular among those under 18.
The results of the study on player age in Fortnite: The JIM (Youth, Information and Media) study by the media educational research association Southwest surveyed 1,200 adolescents and young adults aged between 12 and 19 via telephone about their favorite games.
It turned out: Fortnite is really what many critics and haters like to see in it – a game for kids.
As you can see from the embedded table, Fortnite is consistently number 1 in the age groups of 12-17:
- 27 percent of kids between 12 and 13 prefer it.
- Among 14-15-year-olds, it’s even 28 percent.
- At the age of 16-17, interest noticeably decreases, Fortnite is still in first place, but only with 17 percent
Interest in Fortnite declines with age
From 18 years old, Fortnite becomes much less popular: Once kids become adults, it’s over with Fortnite. In the group of 18-19 year-olds, FIFA climbs to number 1 with 17 percent. Then come GTA and Call of Duty, as well as League of Legends. Fortnite no longer appears in the top 3 of this age group.
Boys love Fortnite more than girls: Another interesting detail from the survey is that boys reported Fortnite as their favorite game about five times more often than girls in the same age group.

This is what the study says about gameplay time: In terms of total gameplay time (regardless of which games), the genders also differ. Boys play an average of 146 minutes a day, girls only 57. The average total gameplay time is 103 minutes during the week and 125 on weekends.
Children are more likely to fall for microtransactions: Another not surprising finding of the study was that young players are more likely to accidentally make microtransactions. Overall, 8 percent of respondents have accidentally purchased something in a game with real money. Most likely Fortnite skins or FIFA packs.
