The Twitch streamer xmarieangel shows numerous reactions from male players on TikTok when they find out they are playing against a woman in Call of Duty: Cold War. The reactions range from declarations of love to insults.
This is what Marie does on TikTok: The streamer shows some conversations with players in CoD Cold War on TikTok. She first defeats entire enemy teams, who express astonishment at her strong gameplay as their first reaction. When Marie then starts to speak and reveals that she is a woman, the reactions become even more surprised.
The reactions are mixed. There are some insults directed at her, but also attempts to flirt. One player even directly proposes to her.
Between Hate and Love in CoD Cold War
Here Marie is insulted: Marie has uploaded a total of 6 videos on TikTok showing how men react to her when she has just eliminated them in Call of Duty.
There are also clips where she is heavily insulted. For example, one player says, “This must be a fat whore,” after she celebrates a good round. Because pretty women surely can’t be that good at Call of Duty:
In another clip, an opponent claims he will uninstall Cold War because he lost against a woman. Here, too, the streamer’s gender is clearly addressed.
Here there is support for Marie: In another clip, she single-handedly defeats the opponents and leads her team to victory. The teammates show surprise that they were just saved by a woman. One of the two teammates even asks if Marie could marry him:
Why is this interesting? In some players’ minds, it is still firmly rooted that gaming is a male world. Every time a woman appears, these people feel their male honor is wounded when they lose to a woman.
The development of the gaming world shows, however, that the image of the man as the only gamer is outdated. There are numerous successful female streamers on Twitch who have thousands of viewers. Women are also making strides in the e-sports scene. For example, in some games, like in Valorant, there are entire teams consisting only of women.
In Germany, the streamer Gnu is particularly well-known. She was the first female gamer in Germany to reach one million subscribers on YouTube. She also reported in an interview with MeinMMO about discrimination due to her gender in the gaming scene:
Sexism in the gaming industry: ‘I thought this was part of it’
