The Twitch streamer TheGrefg got his own skin in Fortnite. With the stream that revealed the new skin, he broke the viewer record on Twitch by a large margin. Why?
What kind of record was that? The Spanish streamer David “TheGrefg” Martinez shattered the record on Twitch for the most concurrent viewers. While showcasing his Fortnite skin on Twitch, over 2.4 million viewers watched him. More than 2 million of the viewers tuned in before he even revealed the skin.
He clearly broke the record for individual streamers not just narrowly, but significantly.
- Star streamer Ninja, who became famous through Fortnite, held the old record with about 680,000 viewers at the same time
- US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had about 600,000 viewers at the same time, while she played Among Us
There are differences with Twitch channels that are not operated by an individual. Such as the channels of PlayStation, Riot Games, or Eleague TV. However, even the viewership numbers of these channels cannot compete with TheGrefg’s new record.

What is this skin reveal?
This was shown: Epic Games has developed a special format for its biggest streamers for Fortnite, the Fortnite Icon Series. Regularly, large streamers receive a skin that resembles their appearance or ideas. The announcement for TheGrefg’s skin came on January 9.
Now he was allowed to present the skin on stream and attracted so many viewers. Starting from January 16, the skin should supposedly be available for purchase in the Fortnite shop.
More skins from the Icon Series:
- Ninja was dedicated the first skin of the Icon Series
- Streamer Loserfruit received this skin from the Icon Series
- Streamer Lachlan presented his skin from the Icon Series in November 2020
Why does TheGrefg reach so many viewers?
The new record on Twitch is no coincidence, but is based on various factors. On one hand, TheGrefg runs a strong channel on YouTube, boasting over 16 million subscribers (via YouTube). His Twitch channel has 6.3 million followers (via Twitch).
Additionally, TheGrefg addresses a huge audience with his streams in Spanish. Between 320 and 400 million people speak Spanish as their native language and 100 to 200 million speak it as a second language. Spanish is the official language or second language in (via enforex.com):

Fortnite’s Twitter channel has over 12 million followers. Additionally, the thousands of interactions with the tweet provided a high outreach. This likely also played a crucial role in the record number of over 2.4 million concurrent viewers in his stream.
