Hasan Piker (30) is a socialist streamer on Twitch. He often criticizes conservative politicians and super-rich billionaires like Bill Gates on his channel “HasanAbi.” Now, Piker has bought a house in Hollywood for $2.74 million. This angers people on the internet who consider HasanAbi hypocritical: preach water, drink wine. Piker says: people should calm down; the prices in LA are just absurdly high.
This is Hasan Piker: The 30-year-old American of Turkish descent made a name for himself during college in a leftist news show on YouTube that was produced by his uncle: “The Young Turks.”
After college, he started his own Twitch channel “HasanAbi” in 2018:
- The channel now has 1.4 million followers.
- The channel is not about gaming but about politics. HasanAbi does live streams, reacts to videos, comments on the behavior of other streamers or current events.
- The channel boomed during the US election between Trump and Biden.
- When Piker streams, an average of 25,000 people watch him – during the election, he had up to 227,000 simultaneous viewers. Some say his show is like “CNN” for the Twitch generation.
This attitude represents Piker: Piker is regarded as a socialist and a critic of capitalism. He supported Bernie Sanders during the US elections in 2016 and 2020.
He repeatedly criticizes other streamers for allegedly right-wing views. For instance, he clashed with the Minecraft YouTuber Dream because Dream was seen with Minecraft creator Notch, who holds views that Piker finds intolerable.
Piker himself advocates for feminism, labor rights, stronger anti-gun laws in the USA, and supports crazy things that are practically considered communism in the USA, like “healthcare for all.”
House in Hollywood with 5 bathrooms bought for $2.74 million
This is what Piker has now bought: Hasan Piker has bought a house with 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms in Hollywood. The property spans 353 square meters.
As pictures show, the spacious house has a pool, a bar with barstools in the kitchen, and all those things.
This is how people criticize him: With the purchase, Piker has come under fire from some conservative media. For the combat paper Breitbart, Piker is just “the internet socialist who said the USA deserved 9/11.”
They point to other “internet socialists” who also buy “multi-million-dollar” properties.
“Unethical” to benefit from socialism in this way
Even from his own fans, Piker receives criticism. A Twitter user tells him: “When you’re that rich, it is indeed immoral not to donate substantial sums to charity.”
Another Twitter user writes:
“I find it simply unethical to profit from socialism and buy a $3 million house in a state that has the highest homeless rate in the country.”
This is how people defend him: Piker also has some supporters who wish him success and congratulate him on his house.
The YouTuber Ethan Klein says, for example, it is a difference between Jeff Bezos, who is worth $150 billion and pays no taxes, and people who earn millions on Twitch and pay 50% taxes. He is glad that Hasan is so successful. One can be a “champion for the poor and underprivileged” and still afford a nice house.
Even the current moderator of Young Turks says: There is nothing wrong with having nice things.
Twitch streamer responds with mockery and attacks on Bill Gates
This is what Piker himself says: He cannot understand the fuss. He says: “Everyone needs to calm down.” The prices in Los Angeles are indeed absurdly high, and he is tired of paying rent; plus, he needs a bigger house for his family and will also stream from the house.
He also donates, some publicly, and some not. The criticism is anyway completely hollow. Such things make idiots believe that Bill Gates is a good person. Donations cannot be a solution to structural problems.
The views of most people are anyway irrelevant to him. They can like him or not.
We probably won’t see a room tour of Hasan Piker’s new villa:
