The streamer Natalia “Alinity” Mogollon is considered a kind of magnet for trouble on Twitch. The death of the WoW player Byron “Reckful” Bernstein is on her mind. She says the many hate messages she regularly receives also take their toll.
That’s why Alinity sparks so many controversies: The Colombian is seen by some Twitch users as the poster girl for a female streamer who relies on sex and scandals to gain attention:
- In July 2019, she made headlines for throwing her cat and kicking a dog
- In December 2019, a clip circulated online showing a compilation of scenes where her dog sniffed her in the groin
- In April 2020, her naked breast flashed for a moment
While Alinity is indeed considered a skilled shooter player in games like Apex Legends or Valorant, these incidents have brought her a lot of negative attention from core users on Twitch who criticize her harshly.
These users even believe that Alinity receives special treatment from Twitch; otherwise, she would surely have been banned a long time ago. However, Alinity calls these accusations completely nonsense and feels unfairly targeted and constantly attacked.
Hate has an effect on people
This is what Alinity says now: In a stream, the streamer processed the news of the death of the streamer Reckful. He was considered a legend on Twitch and in WoW.
It was known, however, that he suffered from bipolar disorder. It affected him when “the chat on Twitch” would harass him. Once, he cried live on stream and explained to the viewers how much it troubled and weighed on him to be confronted with hate messages (via YouTube).
Even before his death, Reckful was reportedly heavily attacked in internet forums and on social media.
Alinity takes this as an opportunity to talk about her own handling of hate messages online:
“You guys have no idea how often I have thought about killing myself. […] I want you to understand that it is really serious. You can’t just send out hate without it having an effect on people.”
Alinity
The streamer says she does not know what to do. Streaming has been her livelihood for 8 years. She cannot just stop so that people would leave her alone.
She has already dealt with her mistakes and wonders if she really has to read thousands of messages about her mistakes every day now. This is something one cannot simply ignore.
Ninja concedes, wants to be less nasty
This was the consequence of the stream: In recent days, Alinity was involved in a dispute with the streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins on Twitter. The two had been bickering back and forth on Twitter when Alinity stood up for her friend xQc, who had gotten into some kind of trouble with Ninja’s wife.
Ninja then asked if Alinity had to abuse another cat. Alinity subsequently called him “classless” and “rude”, stating that he is one of the most toxic people in gaming.
However, after Reckful’s death and Alinity’s stream, Ninja and Alinity decided to delete their respective tweets. They apologized to each other.
Apparently, Reckful’s death has raised awareness of what hate comments online can cause – at least for a moment.
The streamer Ali “Myth” Kabbani is now seen as a total star on Twitch and a bundle of joy. He is the second biggest streamer on the platform and incredibly successful.
However, in September 2018, when he was only 19 years old, he struggled greatly with the situation at that time. He could no longer concentrate on playing because the hate became overwhelming, and he could not just “brush it off and ignore it”, as some outside would easily demand:
Fortnite star is only 19, can no longer cope with hate on Twitch
