Big WoW streamers talk about racism in World of Warcraft. Some are suffering from it, others have at least noticed it.
On the internet, not everyone cares about decency, and sometimes this even leads to real racist problems. This is also the case in World of Warcraft, as two streamers are now reporting. One of them is even glad that big streamers are moving to other MMORPGs like Final Fantasy – because maybe that gives players a wake-up call.
Pro players are particularly racist, says a streamer: Twitch streamer Nick “Nmplol” Polom spoke about racism in World of Warcraft in one of his recent streams.
He explained there:
I had a pretty bad time when I played World of Warcraft. Many of the pro players were racist to me, that’s why I hate all pro players. Well, not all of them, but many of them.
Asmongold also cites examples: The streamer Asmongold, whom most know for his WoW streams, backs up Nmplol and shares that he has also encountered racism in WoW. This involved a guild on his realm that had harassed a black player.
There was a guild on Faerlina, my realm, and they found out that a guy was black and then kicked him out of the guild.
Then they invited him back and asked him if he was ‘still black’. Yes, he said, and was kicked again.
[…] I’m not talking about jokes or memes here. I don’t mean someone who hangs out in /pol/ or on 4chan quoting a few memes. No, this is really evil stuff.
[…] That is honestly the worst thing you can do.
Does World of Warcraft have a general racism problem? It’s hard to say that broadly. In general, there are several methods, such as the report function or directly tickets to GameMasters, to combat racism. It is of course problematic when it occurs in clusters, when groups come together, or when it is even accepted and spread in an entire guild. But the responsibility lies with each individual to combat it.
Have you experienced problems with racism in WoW? Or does that seem less common on the German realms based on your experience?
