Just before the release of Diablo Immortal, Blizzard revealed more about the story of the new MMO. MeinMMO summarizes the new info for you and weaves it into the previously known backgrounds of Diablo Immortal. Caution, spoilers ahead!
When does Diablo Immortal take place? Immortal is a sequel to Diablo 2, taking place between the second and third parts of the series. We now know thanks to a new blog post: 20 years have passed since we defeated Baal in Lord of Destruction.
This also explains why we meet many old acquaintances from earlier parts. The familiar faces include:
- Charsi, the blacksmith from Diablo 2, who is also available in Immortal with her hammer
- Deckard Cain, the famous storyteller, who is now the most important scholar
- Rayek, a barbarian who created the Helliquary
If you’re wondering how they’ve stayed so young: Humans in Diablo are actually Nephalem, the descendants of angels and demons. They stole the Worldstone to create Sanctuary, a “safe world” where they are spared from the Eternal Conflict between Heaven and Hell. It just didn’t work out very well…

After Diablo 2, the world is broken – even more than before
What happened? Baal got his hands on the Worldstone and tried to corrupt it. He didn’t quite succeed, as he was defeated in Lord of Destruction and Tyrael destroyed the corrupted stone.
However, this scattered shards far across the world, and the “essence of the world and all its inhabitants” is changing. Some of the chunks can “distort reality itself.” Moreover, Sanctuary is no longer protected. Angels and demons now have a clear view of the world of humans. This is where Diablo Immortal begins.
The new world and the powerful Worldstone, which can create entire worlds, are attracting new villains. Among them is Skarn, a demon lord that even Deckard Cain does not yet know. Skarn, the Herald of Terror, is the main antagonist of Immortal – so far.
What is our task? We must now essentially clean up. Shards of the Worldstone are scattered everywhere, which we need to collect again and somehow secure. Like radioactive waste that must be transported into safe containers.
During this, we will encounter old villains again throughout the campaign, such as Leoric or the Countess. The Worldstone has apparently done a thorough job. However, once we are “finished,” our task is not yet complete.
We must ensure that Sanctuary remains safe. Therefore, the strongest Nephalem are to act as a shield for the world: the Immortals. This is where the major feature of Diablo Immortal begins, the Cycle of Strife.
To ensure the Immortals do not slack off, the “Shadows” constantly attack them – the second faction of the Nephalem. They test the Immortals to see if they are still truly the best possible defenders.
Diablo 4 will be “even darker”
We do not know how exactly it transitions from the endless cycle of trials to Diablo 3, where the corruption still distorts the world. However, Immortal is also supposed to run for a while – enough time to tell the story.
There is already a small glimpse of what comes after. The corruption from the destroyed Worldstone apparently continues to spread, to the extent that Diablo 4 becomes even darker. What exactly the developers mean by “even darker” is still unknown.
