The former face of WildStar is going on a journey again. After Blizzard, he is now moving to a new “PC project” by Nexon.
Anyone who has been keeping up with the latest MMORPG releases in recent years cannot have missed Stephan Frost. Especially players of WildStar are likely to remember him, as he was the Design Producer and the voice of the “DevSpeak” videos, where he repeatedly broke down the madness of WildStar.
But we all know what happened with WildStar – despite good ideas, the “hardcore” principle failed to convince, and Stephan Frost quickly moved on: to Amazon.
However, this did not last long, because just a few months later, in 2015 he already announced that he would be working at Blizzard as a Senior Design Producer for World of Warcraft. A producer ensures that the actual creatives have everything they need to do their job and meet their goals.
Now Stephan Frost has changed employers once again. Last Friday was his last working day at Blizzard, and last night he announced where he is headed next: the Korean MMO giant Nexon.
He revealed on Twitter that he will be working for Nexon as Creative/Game Director on a “brand new, yet to be announced title for PC.” This is a big promotion for Frost – a “Game Director” is the director of a game, holding all the strings and making the key decisions.
So Frost has moved from a smaller fish in the pond (WildStar) to the ocean (Amazon/Blizzard), and now he is back in a pond (Nexon), but this time as a big fish.
The announcement is unusual in that the trend in South Korea has recently been leaning towards mobile games, and only a few PC games are being developed. Nexon is known for games like Maple Story and Vindictus.
Nexon is probably working on an Unreal Engine 4 MMO in the USA
However, it will likely take a while before we get to see images of the new game. Frost explained that he did not want to create any “hype” with the secrecy surrounding his job change – it is still too early for that, as the project is still in its infancy.
From other job postings by Nexon, it appears that it could be an MMO utilizing the Unreal Engine. Nexon has numerous job openings for their studio in California. But we still don’t know much more.
Do you have high hopes for this new announcement? Or do you find it strange when a developer changes employers so frequently?
