Frontier Developments, the developers of the space online game Elite Dangerous announced support for SteamVR for the game.
Steam and HTC are currently working on the Virtual Reality headset Vive, which will be released for developers by the end of the year and for consumers early next year. Frontier Developments aims to support this technology and enable players to experience the space game Elite Dangerous as a VR experience.
The Virtual Reality Awaits
“We are proud to announce SteamVR support as part of the ongoing expansion of Elite Dangerous,” says Jonny Watts, Chief Creative Officer of Frontier Developments. “In December 2013, we were among the first to integrate virtual reality into a AAA title. For me, exploration, trading, and combat in the scale-accurate Milky Way of Elite Dangerous is an unparalleled experience in virtual reality. We have worked closely with Valve to enable Elite Dangerous on the HTC Vive and are very pleased with the quality.”

The CQC Update Can Be Tested
A first version of Elite Dangerous with SteamVR support will be presented at the EGX event, taking place from September 24 to 27 in Birmingham. The SteamVR support will be available to all owners of the game via a free update. The update is expected to be released by the end of the year. Before that, however, fans can look forward to the CQC update. This introduces several competitive multiplayer modes in Elite Dangerous. The “Open Gamma” of the update is now available, allowing all fans to test the new features. The final version is planned for October and is expected to be released for PC, Mac, and Xbox One.
