What kind of game is Disco Elysium? Disco Elysium is one of the most unique role-playing games of all time. The game uses DnD mechanics but transports the setting to a city that combines elements from France and Eastern Europe.
The game is set in the 50s but also features elements from the 70s, such as disco aesthetics. In general, the game is hard to classify because it mixes many different influences. Politics, particularly communism, plays a significant role in Disco Elysium.

How does the game play? Before you start the game, you can choose an archetype for your character, which is essentially the class that changes its starting values. This is reminiscent of games like Baldur’s Gate, but the values are a bit different.
Intellect, psyche, physique, and motor skills do not fundamentally determine the detective’s combat values, but mainly how he interacts with others. There is no traditional combat in Disco Elysium. How you attempt to solve a murder and interact with people and the environment differs significantly.
Whether you threaten people with your physique or charm them depends on the values. Actions are rolled like in DnD or pen and paper. But your skills in karaoke, poetry, or dancing are also determined by your values and luck with the dice. If you enjoy the freedom of choice in Baldur’s Gate, you’ll feel at home in Disco Elysium as well.
The game offers you 24 different skills and 14 different objects, giving you many solutions for problems in the world. In classic role-playing games, you have a party that accompanies you; in Disco Elysium, the party consists of your thoughts and emotions with which you talk and discuss.
How is the game rated? The game has not only a fantastic critic rating of 97 points on Metacritic. Our colleagues from Gamestar call the game in their review the best role-playing game of 2019. On Steam, the game is loved with a 93% positive user rating.

One should still be prepared to read a lot and that the game is a leisurely, slow-paced game. However, if you immerse yourself in it, you will experience a game that you probably won’t experience again.
