Currently, Pocketpair is celebrating tremendous success with the survival hit. However, their next game is set to be released soon on Steam, which is this time inspired by a major indie star. Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse looks reminiscent of Hollow Knight at first glance, but has a few different twists, including coop.
What is Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse?
- Never Grave is a Metroidvania mixed with roguelite elements
- The animated 2D look is very similar to Hollow Knight
- You can take over enemies with your hat and use their abilities
- You don’t have to do this alone, the game is set to support coop for up to 4 players
- Besides the runs, there’s also base building, which prepares you for future runs
When watching the trailer, you can see many similarities to Hollow Knight, but thanks to the small mechanics and elements, the game still has a lot of its own.
A coop Metroidvania sounds like a great time.
At first glance, the game looks like Hollow Knight. However, it aims to stand out through several mechanics. Never Grave is a Metroidvania with roguelite mechanics. In various runs, you explore a newly generated world every time, instead of exploring a fixed map. This in turn reminds of Dead Cells.
In addition to this feature, base building is also important. Within the base, you can build various structures and utilize resources that strengthen you for the next run. You can take over enemies by putting your hat on them – like in Super Mario Odyssey. Compared to other Metroidvanias, these are interesting mechanics.
The biggest difference to the giants of the genre is probably the local coop, which also receives much praise under the YouTube trailer.

Normally I wouldn’t like this type of games, but then the coop mode and the takeover of monsters were shown and now I have to try it.

I swear, the first clips looked like a bad Hollow Knight copy, but all the extra mechanics seem really fun
