Once Human is a co-op game that throws you into a post-apocalyptic world. It has now announced the beta on Steam. Anyone watching the corresponding trailer will rightly ask themselves: “What did I just see?” Because the trailer is bizarre, but that’s what makes it quite intriguing.
What is it about? Once Human is a multiplayer survival game set to release on Steam in an open horror world. In this post-apocalyptic world, everything has been infested by an alien creature called Stardust and has changed in bizarre ways.
You manage to harness the power of Stardust and fight, explore, and build a new home either alone or together.
What does the trailer show? You get a pretty good impression of the locations and creatures that await you. And if you find yourself speechless afterward, you’re not alone.
The first setting strongly resembles The Last of Us, with a strong sci-fi influence and otherworldly creatures, including giant rabbits wearing sunglasses and top hats.
You find yourself in a post-apocalyptic city that has mostly been reclaimed by nature. Heavily loaded and armed with rifles, you navigate through abandoned and overgrown areas.
The most bizarre location shown in the trailer is a colorful kindergarten where you are stared at by strange figures in white coats. Here, Once Human reveals just a bit of the gameplay: You can see the character aiming at an enemy, which we cannot see yet.
The creatures shown in brief moments afterward are strange. You see spider-legged buses, giant tentacled creatures, and a sort of polar bear with a glowing belly.
The characters sometimes have monitors for heads, suggesting they are customizable. As a small bonus, you get a brief glimpse of the character fishing.
When does the beta start? The beta is scheduled for Winter 2023. How and when you can register for it has not yet been announced by the developer.
