In a gameplay video on YouTube, Norland (Steam) was introduced on June 7th, a new game that is set to start early access on Steam. It is a strategy game/city-builder that strongly resembles RimWorld but also has elements of Crusader Kings 3. The initial reactions to the gameplay are enthusiastic. A demo is set to be released on Steam on June 18th.
This is the situation around Norland:
- Norland has been in development for quite a while. The first post about the game on Steam was published on January 25, 2022. The game was also presented in a trailer a year ago at the “PC Gaming Show”.
- The game is now slowly entering a hot phase. A one-week playable demo will start on June 19th for the “Steam Next Fest”. An “Early Access” launch is also expected on Steam.
- On June 7th, a gameplay overview was released on Norland’s YouTube channel. The game feels like “RimWorld in the Middle Ages,” and fans are excited.
Wolf hunting, sex, and undead hordes – Everything a Steam hit needs
What kind of game is it?
Norland itself claims to be inspired by RimWorld, Crusader Kings, and Caesar. It is a “medieval kingdom simulation that produces complex stories”:
- You create and lead a noble family and choose a province
- With the noble family, you move into a city inhabited by numerous independent residents. They work, spend money, and wait for orders from their lords.
- The social relationships between the noble figures will be important. Players can influence the relationships between the nobles with commands. In Norland, there will be conflicts, sex, wolf hunts, and duels.
- It will be possible to raid neighbors, acquire knowledge, and further expand the city.
- Additionally, one will be able to raise armies to defend against a global threat, the “Unholy Horde”.
Stories that emerge from the game, and the high “buzz” factor
What is the appeal of such games? RimWorld and Crusader Kings are games that allow for free play and continually create new, unpredictable stories that emerge from the game itself.
Players set their own goals for what they want to achieve, and must deal with unforeseen conflicts along the way, such as when game characters who are supposed to cooperate suddenly hate and wage war on each other, or when a famine or plague breaks out that needs to be managed quickly.
It’s a bit like building a sandcastle on the beach, but as soon as you look away for 2 seconds, a neighbor kid comes and kicks over 3 towers.
The games have a high “buzz” factor because, over time, there are more and more characters with special traits that continue to specialize and get better at individual tasks.
Games like Rimworld or Crusader Kings have an extremely high replay value and are therefore games in which people invest hundreds or thousands of hours.
What are the reactions? Under the YouTube video, the reactions to the gameplay overview are enthusiastic. The game apparently fully engages its target audience:
- “The game looks unbelievably fantastic. Like a combination of RimWorld and Crusader Kings 3”
- “It looks great. I hope it plays as well as it looks. The game could be a huge hit on Steam.”
- “The RimWorld vibe immediately captivated me. Individual traits on the pawns make games sooo much more interesting.”
- “Can’t wait to sink hundreds of hours of my life into it.”
