The new action RPG Wolcen is offline on Steam. For more than 30 hours, the servers have been down for maintenance. Nothing happened all Saturday. Wolcen can only be played offline. Fans expect new information at 12 AM UTC: We will clarify the situation and when Wolcen will be back online.
This is the situation with Wolcen: On Friday night into Saturday, the online servers of Wolcen went down for maintenance. At 1 AM, Wolcen tweeted and apologized for the inconveniences.
The maintenance was then extended twice:
- first until Saturday 6 PM
- then until Sunday 12 PM UTC, which corresponds to 1 PM our time.
Whether Wolcen will be back online at 1 PM on Sunday afternoon is still unclear. The team only said that the servers will not be back online before then.
The last message came on Saturday evening at 8:13 PM. It stated that the Wolcen team is working day and night to bring the servers back online.
Update 12:25 PM: The Wolcen team has announced again. They have fixed the database, but it will probably take more time until the servers go online. Soon a new assessment will follow regarding when Wolcen can be played online again.
The problem with the character data arose from the enormous influx: There were too many simultaneous connections to the server.
It looks like they cannot meet the Sunday 1 PM deadline.
The Wolcen team explains the long downtime
Update 3:09 PM: There is now a blog post in which the developers explain the problem in more detail (via steamcommunity). They deployed a hotfix on Friday night. After the hotfix, players reported:
- characters were missing
- the chests were emptied
- and the endgame progress was deleted
The team then took the Wolcen servers offline and worked on a fix. However, during that time, more problems arose, such as issues with the in-game economy (apparently with gold exploits).
Players should know that they are addressing these problems and will report back when they know more.
That’s why Wolcen is offline for maintenance
What is the problem? The maintenance work is apparently mainly about ensuring that players return to the state they were in before the servers went down.
It is said: The heroes, their belongings, and the endgame online should be brought back to the state they were in before the server downtime.
Additionally, Wolcen wants to implement safeguards to prevent such issues from happening again.
In the meantime, players reported that their hero and all progress had been deleted.
Already on release day, the online mode of Wolcen was not playable.
Wolcen is playable, but character is isolated
Can you still play Wolcen? Yes, Wolcen is playable in an offline mode.
There is a catch: The character in offline mode can only be played there and alone, not in co-op.
Anyone planning to play Wolcen with others will have to redo what they are currently playing offline with an online character.
Maintenance work at Wolcen dampens the Steam hype
This is the reaction: Things are on fire at Wolcen. The game is extremely popular on Steam.
However, the offline phase is now significantly affecting the hype:
- On Friday night into Saturday, 95,270 players were online at the peak
- In the last 24 hours, while the servers were already down, the maximum simultaneous players reached 56,118 on Steam.
There are already many memes and complaints on reddit. They say Wolcen is not “Lords of Mayhem,” but “Lords of Maintenance.”

Apparently, the influx of players to the game is much larger than the developers expected, and at the same time, the state is significantly more unstable than fans hoped for.
The main topic of discussion is: We want to play Wolcen so badly, but it wasn’t ready for release yet.
Known memes are circulating with the toothless man who recounts the supposed internal thoughts of the Wolcen developers in Spanish while laughing his head off.
If you want to engage with Wolcen in the meantime, we recommend the Mage build for Pestlord.
We will keep you informed on MeinMMO about how things will go with Wolcen.
