The new Steam hit Mordhau has already sold over 500,000 copies. This was revealed in an open letter from the developers. They thank the community and share their plans for what is to come. But how did Mordhau become so popular?
This is how popular Mordhau is: Mordhau was released on April 29, 2019. After just over a week, the new hit has already recorded over 500,000 sold copies on Steam. According to steamcharts, over 60,000 players were playing Mordhau simultaneously at times.
Currently, Mordhau is still at rank 1 of the global top sellers on Steam. (As of May 7 at 4:30 PM) For the indie team of Triternion, who developed Mordhau, this is an “incredible” success that the team “still cannot fully realize”.
The rush on the servers of Mordhau was so great shortly after release that there were some connection issues. These have since been resolved, but they show that the success probably surprised the creators as well.
What players like about Mordhau: The reason for the rising popularity is mainly the features that Mordhau offers. These include:
- many options for customizing your classes
- dozens of weapons and various armor classes
- different game modes such as Battle Royale or Deathmatch
- own servers
- completely crazy weapons like lutes and frying pans
- exciting gameplay with “Friendly Fire”, siege equipment and horses
In addition, the gameplay and graphics of Mordhau simply convince many fans. For a multiplayer game with up to 64 players per server and countless weapons, Mordhau still looks quite good and runs smoothly.
The different weapons with their unique playstyles and various modes and functions are also well received. Many fans simply enjoy that a sword fighting game offers so much variety and yet realistic combat.
This is how Mordhau is received in the community
The reviews for Mordhau on Steam are currently at 76% positive. (“mostly positive”) Our readers at MeinMMO also share positive opinions about Mordhau:
Ultra cool game! I can’t wait for the rush to be over and the few small issues to be fixed. I will probably have countless hours of fun with it.

After I got the game yesterday and gave it a try, I have to say that it absolutely delivers on the first impression. With a well-thought-out combat system that thankfully isn’t a hack & slash, it has a steep learning curve when facing a good player in 1v1 who does more than just hammer the left mouse button.

What’s next for Mordhau?
In the message from Triternion, some plans for Mordhau’s future have already been revealed. Among other things, two new maps named Castello and Feitoria are already in the works.
In addition, one of the initial problems regarding the distribution of experience points and gold will be addressed once again. Compensation for players will come with the next patch.
At the moment, critical bugs are more of a focus, but work is already being done on new modes.
- Above all, ranked
- and competitive modes will be introduced, starting with 1v1 duels.
- However, there is no date for the release yet.
