Leisure Suit Larry is considered infamous in PC gaming. Now, 7 games from the series have been removed from Steam. The reasons behind this are unclear. The retro games remain available on another platform.
Which games are involved? Leisure Suit Larry is a series of point-and-click adventures in which you accompany Larry Laffer, the protagonist of the series, on his risqué adventures. The first game was released in 1987. The last game in the series, Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice, came out in 2020. The series has been notorious for its risqué stories and sexual innuendos for about 3 decades.
During the merger of Vivendi and Activision, the brand was sold to Codemasters, which then licensed the brand to Assemble Entertainment in 2017. The brand owner remains Codemasters.
Steam has removed the oldest “Leisure Suit Larry” games
What has been removed now? Valve has now removed the first 7 games from the series from its platform Steam. If you visit the corresponding shop page of the games or the list of games on Steam, you will see a message that the games are no longer available.
You can only buy the two newer titles developed by CrazyBunch and published by Assemble Entertainment: Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry (2018) and Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice (2020).
Why were the games removed? Steam has not provided any information on this. The publisher also did not give reasons for the removal of the games. The older titles had no more than 100 reviews per game on Steam and received more or less mixed feedback. The publisher Assemble Entertainment states (via PCGamesn.com and Steampowered.com):
After decades of questionable pickup lines and unforgettable adventures, it’s finally time for Larry to hang up his leisure suit – at least the retro version of it. But don’t worry. If you already own these retro gems, they will remain in your library and are always accessible whenever you need a nostalgic dose of Larry’s adventures.
By the way, the removal affects all shop pages and not just the German Steam store, where games with sexual content are regularly blocked.
Where can you still buy the games? On the platform GOG.com, you can still purchase the old titles for a few euros. GOG has included the games in the so-called “GOG Preservation Program,” so the titles should remain available to you.
However, it is possible that GOG may also remove the games if there are legal reasons behind their disappearance: For example, Microsoft removed Forza Horizon 4 from digital stores because the licenses for the car brands have expired (via forza.net).
