The HBO hit series Game of Thrones offers a fascinating world that many gamers would love to explore. Video game adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s work have been mixed so far, but now a big game is coming. A mod will integrate “Game of Thrones” into the strategy game “Crusader Kings 3” (Steam) – this has worked outstandingly well in previous installments of the dynasty simulator. The mod will be released in a few days, on April 14.
Are there already “Game of Thrones” games? Yes, there are, but they haven’t been very good games so far. Game of Thrones is complex, set in a massive world with countless characters. This is difficult to translate into a video game.
- The probably best game of Game of Thrones was the “Telltale” version from 2014. “Telltale” games are interactive, clearly scripted stories.
- There is also a digital board game with 71% positive reviews on Steam.
- A free strategy game has only 57% positive reviews and is described in reviews as “extremely designed to be pay-to-win.”
The new game “Crimson Desert” is heavily inspired by Game of Thrones:
Kill the Mad King in the Red Keep
What’s next? Game of Thrones will be released as a mod for “Crusader Kings 3” (92% positive reviews on Steam).
The mod already existed for Crusader Kings 2 and is widely regarded as the best mod for the game.
What kind of scenario is played there? The game starts about 17 years before the series “Game of Thrones” begins: with Robert Baratheon’s rebellion against the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen.
During this time, many foundations were laid on which the later series was based.
Crusader Kings 3 is an engaging dynasty simulator and story generator
Why is this the only right way for Game of Thrones to become a game? Crusader Kings 3 is fundamentally a relationship and dynasty simulator that puts players in conflict-ridden situations so they can generate and experience their own stories.
The player’s decisions shape the world in the Middle Ages. The wife one marries in generation 1, 866 in a small village in Ireland decides which character will conquer England in 1002.
Game of Thrones, on the other hand, is overflowing with special characters: It is an ideal breeding ground for these stories. And those who have read the novels or watched the series will surely have found some favorites they would love to see on the Iron Throne.
Perhaps a more worthy end for Robert Baratheon could be found, who in the novels was killed by his wife, having once been a great warrior, now fat and drunk.
Crusader Kings 3 gives players the choice:
- Do you want to play like the noble Ned Stark, always loyal to friends and family and relying on loyalty?
- Or do you want to be a lying, cheating scoundrel who shamelessly seduces women, marries them, and then kills them to secure their inheritance?
- Or do you want to marry your own sister, like a true Targaryen?
There is room for all these things in Crusader Kings 3, rewarding them at times with absurd achievements.
Even earlier mods for Game of Thrones in Crusader Kings were extremely popular:
- The mod for Crusader Kings 2 was released in 2012 and has 966 reviews and a score of 9.5 on a fan site (via moddb)
When is it coming out? The game will be released in a beta version on April 14 and will then be regularly expanded.
Fans are already excited and looking forward to the experience.
