Many new horror games on Steam draw inspiration from Resident Evil or games like Outlast, where you must survive without resistance. However, a new Steam game reminds of the not-so-old Scorn and aims to impress with puzzles and an unusual atmosphere.
What kind of game is this? In Unholy you actually live peacefully with your child. But one day that changes when your child is kidnapped and sacrificed by a cult. You were once part of this cult and this ritual is the key to their world domination.
As a mother, you now have to try to save your child’s soul. For this, you puzzle through both reality and a nightmarish institution full of bizarre opponents. The highlight, however, is the unusual atmosphere reminiscent of Silent Hill.
If you enjoy an atmospheric world in other genres as well, then perhaps the co-op shooter Remnant 2 is something for you.

How does Unholy play? In the first-person perspective, you must explore and solve various puzzles. You need to figure out codes for locks or rotate objects to gain secret information.
In doing so, you absorb the mysteriously unusual atmosphere and its story. Visually, the game mixes classic Gothic horror aesthetics with Lovecraftian influences. For a small indie game, a great audiovisual experience has been created.
But similar to Scorn, the gameplay and combat leave something to be desired. The Steam reviews also criticize the gameplay but praise the fantastic atmosphere.

Unholy was a real surprise for me. I had fun from start to finish. The graphics are really good, the atmosphere and sound work hand in hand to draw you in.
If you expect good gameplay, you might want to steer clear of the game. But if you want to be captivated by a dense and dark atmosphere, then Unholy is worth every glance, as both positive and negative reviews agree and praise the audiovisual experience.
