If you are familiar with the Dynasty Warriors
games from Koei Tecmo, then you will know what to expect in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 (via Steam). With the well-known characters from the anime and manga series, you beat your way through countless hordes of enemies. The anime license fits perfectly with the familiar gameplay.
Who hasn’t always wanted to beat up thousands of marines as Luffy, Kaido, or Whitebeard? Over the course of the story, you replay various events, and later there’s even an alternative scenario. There are 43 playable characters in the base game, and if you still can’t get enough, you can expand the roster with DLC characters.
However, don’t expect a strong focus on the story. Warriors titles focus on the spectacle of large battles. But if you’re eager to turn heads as a pirate and wreak havoc on battlefields, this is the perfect title for you. And the best part is, you can even play it in co-op.
Play the spectacular finale of Naruto
Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (via Steam) is a typical 3D arena fighter, but in my opinion, it’s also the best in the genre. No game manages to pack anime battles as spectacularly into a game as Ultimate Ninja Storm 4.
With over 100 characters, you can fight against bots or your friends. The big highlight is the story mode that retells the finale of Naruto. Major battles are staged as spectacular boss fights with quick-time events and stunning effects. For me, it’s the best way to relive the series finale.
The game presents itself in a beautiful cel-shading look and remains one of the most beautiful anime games of all time even after nearly 9 years, making it a worthy adaptation of one of the most popular animes ever.
Wacky abilities and unique character design
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R (via Steam) is a remaster of a PS3 game that adapts the popular manga series as a 2D fighter. The major focus is on the large roster of characters and the quirky abilities that differ from classic anime power-ups.
I really enjoyed that the story didn’t have a major focus. The single-player concentrates on various challenge battles that can become quite challenging. Additionally, the game is full of fan service. Countless unlockable costumes and quotes made me swoon as a JoJo fan.
In battles against friends, the combat system then shows its full potential, which brings enough depth for genre fans to experiment with characters. However, the online mode also has to be criticized for its mediocre netcode, which can make it take longer to find online opponents. As a big fan of Tekken and Street Fighter, I loved this fighter every second.
In this context, you can also recommend Dragon Ball FighterZ, which is currently available as a fantastic 2D fighter.
