Something for everyone
Is it worth taking on this overwhelm? The great advantage of WoW is that compared to all other genre representatives on the market, you can expect a package of solid to very good content that addresses various types of players.
You can experience WoW well solo, for example. You can reach maximal level just by completing quests. Selected dungeons can be approached with AI companions. Additionally, more and more content is available to solo players, for instance, the depths of The War Within.
At the same time, WoW offers some of the best and most varied group challenges in the genre, ranging from “easy” to “super hard.” Or you can dive into PvP and choose between arenas and battlegrounds, ranked or unranked, as a casual player or future esports pro.
Similarly, you can play WoW as a kind of economic simulation, trying to dominate the auction house, become a successful hunter, breed pets for Pokémon-style battles, complete your collection, or level up numerous side characters. Regarding the range of content, WoW is still a real powerhouse in 2024.

The downsides of the community
How helpful is the WoW community? Of course, a blanket answer cannot be given to this question. Like everywhere, there are a few bad apples in Azeroth, but also many great companions.
In our experience, it is easier to get assistance or answers to basic questions as a newcomer in other MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV (thanks to the newcomer chat) or Lord of the Rings Online (just a great community).
In WoW, the general chat, with the default settings, is usually cluttered with ads for boosting. Any attempt at a simple conversation easily gets lost here. It gets significantly better, of course, if you find a guild of like-minded individuals who want to make the virtual life in Azeroth a bit easier for newcomers.
How toxic is WoW? With such a guild, you may also avoid the LFR mode, group search for Mythic Plus dungeons, and PvP with random groups. These are the three areas where things can be quite toxic in WoW, especially when things aren’t fast, smooth, and successful enough.
Moreover, it can be frustrating when, after a long wait, you still haven’t found a group for a low-key dungeon because your item level is not high enough, you have too little experience, or you are playing the wrong class/spec. All of this can await you in the endgame of WoW.
Is it worth starting with WoW in 2024?
The content package that WoW offers remains one of the best and most diverse in the genre even almost 20 years after its release. However, it can sometimes feel overwhelming and like work to get familiar with this world of Warcraft and all its options, systems, and content.
As a story lover, you should not expect a coherently told campaign story. The story of WoW, in its current form, is a puzzle that must be painstakingly pieced together – also through parts outside the game – and even then, it may not form a satisfying overall picture. Individual passages and even expansions are, however, told excitingly and staged beautifully.
If the story flaws do not bother you and you are eager to delve into WoW, now is a great time to start. With The War Within, the next chapter has opened up, and there is a lot happening on the WoW servers again.
