In the SciFi RPG Starfield, you decide who you want to be. A first step in this is choosing your background, which provides you with a backstory and skills. What is worth taking at the beginning, you can find out here on MeinMMO.
What does the background provide? The selection determines what life you led before the space adventure. This directly influences the gameplay at the start and the dialogue options available to you:
- 3 skills from the background
- Special dialogue options
The initial skills significantly shape the first hours of the game, but become less important over time as you can activate the skills yourself later.
In the medium term, the backstory is more important, as you’ll gain new dialogue options with like-minded NPCs. Think about who you want to be and where you want advantages. If you prefer to be a pirate, you shouldn’t choose the background “Pilgrim.” You might miss out on cool conversations with criminal colleagues.
Our list focuses more on the skills that provide you with the greatest value at the start. If you are leaning towards “role-playing” and want others to react to your character accordingly, then choose a background that fits your story.
Starfield: Background for Start – Diplomat
What skills does “Diplomat” bring?
- Persuasion
- Trade
- Well-being
What does it provide? A typical starter mix for Bethesda games: “Persuasion” opens many doors early on that require weapon-assisted persuasion for other players. “Trade” ensures that the few credits in your pocket are worth a bit more.
“Well-being” gives you higher health and is thus a generally strong skill that helps you in every fight.
What alternative suits? Industrial – Also comes with “Persuasion,” but gives you “Security” instead of “Trade,” which is the thief skill for lockpicking. Additionally, with “Research Methods” you get a small bonus on research.
Starfield: Background for Start – Soldier
What skills does “Soldier” bring?
- Fitness
- Ballistics
- Boostpack Training
What does it provide? As a soldier, your weapon is at the ready, and you are specialized in ground combat. “Fitness” improves the efficiency of your oxygen supply, and “Ballistics” increases the damage of ballistic weapons. You can engage in longer battles, and with the increased damage, battles take less time. This provides security.
The whole thing is rounded off with “Boostpack Training,” which allows you to use the boostpack right from the start and significantly increases your mobility.
What alternative suits? Bounty Hunter – If you see yourself more in space combat, then opt for the Bounty Hunter. Especially if you are keen on the extensive shipbuilding options.
Starfield: Background for Start – FILE ERROR
What skills does “FILE ERROR” bring?
- Well-being
- Ballistics
- Flying
What does it provide? Do you want to avoid committing to a background and prefer to create your own story? Choose FILE ERROR. There is no information about your life, and you receive a balanced mix of skills focused on combat.
But keep in mind: You will miss out on the additional conversation options that a defined background offers. Bethesda-typical would be if you find a specific quest during Starfield that investigates the mysterious origins of “FILE ERROR.”
What alternative suits? Rogue – you are a bit of a trickster, but do not let yourself be categorized as “good” or “bad.” Here too, you get a balanced skill mix, but with “Persuasion” in the portfolio. Additionally, you get “Pistol Certification” and “Flying.”
How do you choose your background? Do you focus on role-playing or is gameplay a priority for you? What background do you take to start? Leave a comment on the topic.
