Starfield forgoes an extensive gear system: helmet, suit, backpack, and some clothing underneath. How you can secure a hefty armor right from the start that you can pick up on the go is explained on MeinMMO.
The new sci-fi RPG Starfield provides you with better gear the longer you are in the game. Part of the great freedom in the Bethesda game is that you can get really strong items early on. You just have to be observant or adventurous enough.
This applies to legendary spaceships as well as strong gear. The next time you visit the Constellation lodge, you should take a close look at the cellar.
Where can you find the gear? As soon as you receive the key to the lodge from the Constellation, leave the building. Turn around and enter the building again. Now you will see a door on the right that can easily be overlooked.
The door opens the way to the cellar. Here you will find workbenches and a Constellation mission terminal. Look around, collect useless junk as usual and after a while, you should discover the storage room where a suit has been set up behind a glass panel.
To pick the lock, you actually need the skill at “Master”. However, you can select the figure behind the glass wall on the upper edge at the front right and open the figure’s inventory. This allows you to get the suit even without lockpicking experience.
What does the gear provide? You get a backpack, a helmet, and a suit, all with “normal” rarity. So there are no perks or special effects on the items. It’s standard armor for the start, but the defense values are really strong:

For the backpack, you might want to consider alternatives. Even though the stats are strong, the item does not improve your carrying capacity. The price might be too high – especially if you like to take a lot of junk with you.
Visually, the matching set also looks great. Since there is no transmog feature in Starfield, one should not underestimate the appearance.

It’s not quite certain whether the developers intended for you to get the suit without being a master locksmith. But this hurdle wouldn’t be too big anyway. So grab the strong, stylish piece and get even more good stuff.
