The Star Wars spin-off Rogue One had a sensational box office launch. It has already generated over 290 million US dollars worldwide. In Germany, it is even the most successful film launch of the entire year.
Rogue One is already a huge success for Disney. By the end of the first weekend after the film’s release, the box office numbers with over 290 million US dollars worldwide speak volumes. In the USA alone, Rogue One grossed 155 million US dollars in its opening weekend. This easily placed the Star Wars spin-off in the top 3 of the most successful US box office openings of 2016. Only Captain America: Civil War (179 million) and Batman vs. Superman (166 million) were slightly more successful.
The most successful film of the Republic!
While Americans favored superheroes, the Germans were so fascinated by Rogue One that over a million citizens wanted to see the movie over the weekend. This resulted in a gross of 12.5 million US dollars in Germany, making it easily the most successful film in the Federal Republic in 2016.
However, Rogue One is clearly lagging behind the numbers of the last Star Wars film “Episode VII: The Force Awakens.” This film attracted over two million people to theaters in Germany on its release in 2015 and grossed 25 million US dollars. Worldwide, Episode VII brought in a respectable 248 million US dollars. Rogue One needs to significantly improve its numbers to catch up.
