The first reviews and ratings for Star Wars Battlefront 2 are here. On the Metacritic page, the press paints a positive picture of the Star Wars shooter, while players brutally tear it apart.
Hardly any game has been discussed as controversially as Star Wars Battlefront 2 lately. Most players agree that the Star Wars shooter works great as a game, looks awesome, and is a lot of fun.
However, the more details about the loot boxes in the game emerged, the more criticism arose. After all, the loot boxes contain gameplay-relevant “Star Cards,” and for many players, that crosses the line into pay-to-win.
And when it became known that you have to grind around 40 hours to unlock iconic characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker, the shitstorm really blew up, and readers flooded EA with angry comments, calls for boycotts, and even death threats! However, EA backed down and drastically reduced the costs for the heroes.
How Battlefront II performs on Metacritic
The first user reviews on Metacritic are unimaginably bad. The PS4 version of Battlefront 2 has a user score of only 1.3 at the time of this news (14.11.2017, 14:00 Uhr)! Over 400 users cast their votes.
However, these user ratings should always be taken with caution; they are not representative of the entire game. They reflect the current sentiment surrounding the loot box debacle. A large part of the criticism consists of “emotional judgments.”
Moreover, the full release is still pending on November 17. We will see how the user rating will change then.
Things look quite different in the press, which was also able to test the game in advance. Some reviews are still in the making. The existing ratings paint a positive picture. There, Battlefront received 79 (out of a maximum of 100) points.

What the press says about Battlefront 2
Most press reviews of Battlefront 2 are positive. For example, COGConnected states that Battlefront 2 has repeatedly proven that EA listens to players and has thus created a good Star Wars game in the end. The loot boxes are annoying, but that could still change. Moreover, the Star Wars feeling is fantastic and the game modes are fun.
IGN is a bit more reserved. The final rating has not yet been decided, and the author criticizes the rather weak single-player campaign and the loot boxes. Furthermore, he finds the game is not a serious competitive shooter. However, it is a fun and casual Star Wars shooter full of cool details that should certainly please any fan.
GameSpot shares a similar view. The campaign is said to lack narrative strength, and the microtransactions and loot boxes are definitely not good for the game. On the other hand, it is just a ton of fun!
The colleagues at PC Games are also quite disappointed with the single-player campaign. It is shorter than expected and lacks depth. A wasted opportunity. The multiplayer part, on the other hand, is fun and would spread excellent Star Wars atmosphere. A final rating is still pending.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be released on November 17, 2017, on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Premium buyers can start as early as November 14.
