EA talks about the future of its shooter franchises Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield.
At an investor meeting, there was “sparse” information regarding the future of EA’s shooter franchises. What EA’s CFO told the investors might concern fans.
Battlefront bigger and more beautiful – Battlefield on hold for now
CFO Blake Jorgensen has dampened the spirits of Battlefield fans: There will be “no new game for Battlefield for a few years”. The next one is not expected before 2018, as can be read between the lines. EA, however, has provided little information on this.
Star Wars Battlefront is the “hotter” topic right now. Here, they want to tackle issues from last year and improve upon them. The sequel is promised to incorporate materials from the “new” films and be “more exciting and significantly larger” than its predecessor, Jorgensen assures. Star Wars Battlefront has been primarily criticized for lacking a single-player campaign and not offering space battles. The game was generally considered “too shallow”.
A part of the statements could concern shooter fans
It might make shooter fans a bit uneasy when the CFO elaborates on how to transfer the successful model of “FIFA Ultimate Team” to its shooters.
He cites FUT as a “shining example” of how to keep players engaged, how to increase their “engagement”. This is the top goal in all projects, even before “monetization.” Jorgensen admits that both are interconnected.
One has to find ways to enhance that “engagement” without disrupting the gameplay. FIFA Ultimate Team achieves this. Managing to do something similar in other games is a big challenge, but also exciting.
[pullquote]”It’s not just about building another game. If we can build another stream of revenue that’s high-profit, it’s highly accretive to the overall company.” EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, quoted by GameSpot.[/pullquote]
It’s not just about building a new game, but ensuring a steady stream of revenue that brings high profit.
FIFA FUT is highly controversial among fans, many see it as a “cash cow” for FIFA. Players buy card packs with FIFA Points, which contain random football players with various values and in different versions. Some invest a small fortune.
