In a new video, Marco Risch from Nerdkultur talks about the series Andor from the Star Wars universe and what makes the series so special.
Who is Marco Risch? Since 2015, Marco Risch has been working on his YouTube channel Nerdkultur with news, analyses, reviews, and interviews on current movies and series.
In addition, he meets weekly with his colleague Yves Arievich to chat in the Podcast Nerd & Kultur about pop culture film topics like Star Wars, Marvel, and DC.
Both the YouTube channel and the podcast are part of the Webedia network, which also includes MeinMMO.
In one of his latest videos, Marco discusses the Star Wars series Andor in the context of season 2. He explains why the series is so good and so different from other series in the Star Wars universe.
Music, Camera, and Spy Thriller
What makes Andor so special? In his video, Marco elaborates on five ideas from the trailer for season 2 that show why Star Wars: Andor is a special series and how it differs significantly from other series. The first point he mentions is the choice of rebellious music, which shows what the series stands for.
Marco goes into more detail on the second point. Andor is at its core not a Star Wars series, but a spy thriller. He explains that series creator Tony Gilroy wanted to tell an agent war film
with his first film in this universe, Rogue One. Marco states: The story takes precedence. Not the franchise in which it takes place.
As the third point, Marco mentions the camera work. He explains that both Rogue One and Andor always place the characters in the center of large themes. This highlights the emotions of the characters. Marco compares this symmetry to the legendary director Stanley Kubrick, known for his perfectionism.
The visual language in Andor illustrates the emotional world and the current situation of the characters in dialogues and important scenes. However, this is only possible because there are real sets, not just a greenscreen.
Currently, you can even watch the first 3 episodes of Andor for free on YouTube:
The Rise of the Empire and the Start of the Resistance
What are the other 2 ideas? As a 4th point, Marco mentions the Empire and its development after the events of Episode 3. The evolution of the Empire is shown in all structures. Among the stormtroopers, but also among important officers. What is special about Andor are the characters of the Empire.
They are not simply evil for the sake of being evil. The series shows characters of the Empire with their human traits. Additionally, there is the character Orson Krennic, who acts as a counterpart. He is a fanatic who only wants to rise. Marco compares him to Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds.
Marco emphasizes that the regime’s forces are also used against the Empire. Such as the security droid K-2SO, who helps the Alliance.
Correspondingly, Marco’s last point is also meaningful. In Andor, it is about the resistance, about the revolution against the fascist Empire. The finale of the first season shows how an event can cause the resistance to change, unite, and become more radical. Marco states that George Lucas’s motives are further developed.
When does Andor Season 2 start? You won’t have to wait much longer for the continuation of Andor. On April 23, 2025, you can look forward to 3 episodes. After that, 3 more episodes will be released weekly, every Wednesday. In total, there are supposed to be 12 episodes, divided into 4 chapters according to the release structure. Marco has also already analyzed another Disney series: Disney cannot easily replicate this
