The announcement of a new ship for the space MMO Star Citizen has upset fans of EVE Online, leading to a minor conflict between the two communities. The developers of EVE have also weighed in.
A War of Stars!
What happened? Cloud Imperium Games announced a new salvage ship for Star Citizen called the Vulture. However, the Star Citizen ship looks very similar to the “Venture” ship from EVE Online. It’s unclear how this design came about, but players of EVE Online believe that a designer from Star Citizen simply copied the look of the Venture.
A heated dispute. This sparked a heated dispute between the two communities. The accusations and insults even led Star Citizen fans to report the EVE community on Reddit for allegedly “downvoting” posts so that criticism threads would not appear on the front page due to insufficient votes, making them harder to find.
CCP Games is having fun with the situation. CCP Games, the creators of EVE, have now released a skin bundle for the Venture ship, costing 120 Plex and named “Venture Capitalist.” This is no coincidence. The Star Citizen ship Vulture costs 120 dollars. And in EVE, there’s a warning about nasty “vultures” (engl. Vulture) that disturb you while mining with the “Venture” ship.
The name and price of the Venture skin bundle are clearly a reference to the new SC ship and its price.
In the explanation of the fun package, there is information highlighting the differences from Star Citizen:
For 120$, the price of the ship in Star Citizen, one gets 6 months of Omega subscription in otherwise free MMORPG or can buy 36,500 Ventures.
