With the current update 3.3.0t, it is now possible to purchase ships directly in the space MMO Star Citizen. However, it’s not cheap.
The purchase of ships is an important feature in Star Citizen, as it finances the further development of the game. While you could only purchase spacecraft outside the game until now, you can now do so directly in the game – with in-game currency. However, it takes a long time to earn.
You can now buy ships directly in Star Citizen
Here’s how to buy ships in Star Citizen now: In the current Alpha, you visit Teach’s Ship Shop, which has a selection of spacecraft ready for you.
- Each of the ships will be presented to you
- You can even board the ships and take a close look at them
- However, it is not possible to start and fly the ships
Are the ships too expensive?
Players criticize the prices: The prices of the ships in Teach’s Ship Shop are quite high.
- The Cutlass ship costs about 1.5 million aUEC (in-game currency in the Alpha).
- The starter ship Aurora costs 200,000 aUEC.
- Due to the current economic situation in the game, it takes an extremely long time to afford a ship.
- A transport of goods takes about 15 minutes and earns 100 aUEC.
- A mission with a similar duration earns 750 aUEC. Although it also depends on the type of ship you are currently flying, since they differ in speed and therefore missions can sometimes be completed faster. Still, this circumstance shows that it will take a long time to afford a good ship.
- To earn an Aurora, you roughly need about 50 play hours.
Unless this system gets adjusted accordingly, which is not that unlikely. Because Star Citizen is still in the Alpha phase. For testing purposes, players were given some money to try out the system.
This is how fans are reacting: The currently high prices for ships and the related effort to earn them could lead many fans to prefer to buy the ships directly. Accordingly, the current prices are not well received by the community.
- Seb says in the official forum: “Yep. Pay2Win in all its glory.”
But there are also fans who see this completely differently and defend the prices:
- Hex Koda writes: “You will be able to rent ships or buy used ships. It will also be possible to serve on board a large ship. Surely there will also be lucrative missions later on. It’s not worth freaking out about this now.”
The topic of “buying ships” is still a hotly debated issue within the community. And it will likely remain a controversial topic.
