In Star Citizen, a discussion about Pay2Win is raging. The developer makes an interesting statement: In its space simulation, there can be no “Pay2Win” because no one can truly win.
What happened? In the turbulent forums of Star Citizen, there was an uproar about the “in-game money.”
Until then, players could only collect a certain amount of in-game money (UEC), but that was limited by a maximum cap. This limit has been lifted – from now on, players can collect as much Star Citizen money as they want – albeit with a daily cap.
Pay2Win allegations arise again
The forum is ablaze: As so often, this led to a discussion where two groups claimed the interpretation of this news for themselves.
- Critics said: This is clearly Pay2Win. They are running out of money and now they want to rake in more cash. This allows people who invest more real money in Star Citizen to buy an even greater advantage than they already have.
- Defenders said: This is just hate against the game. This is a minor issue that changes nothing. This is the same discussion every time; bored haters crawl out of their holes wanting to harm our game.
What does Pay2Win mean? Pay2Win means that you can buy advantages in a game with real money. When exactly something is considered Pay2Win is hotly debated.
For some, “any kind of purchasable advantage” is already Pay2Win. For others, Pay2Win only starts when additional conditions are met: When the advantages are particularly great or exclusive and you can’t keep up with the “whales” who spend a lot of money without investing money.
Star Citizen constantly under suspicion of Pay2Win: This Pay2Win discussion has been raging for years around Star Citizen, sometimes swelling, sometimes fading. Critics accuse Star Citizen of taking in enormous sums by constantly pushing new digital ships at outrageous prices.
However, defenders say that everything is okay and within reason. It’s not really about gaining true advantages; they just want to support the game and its development.
The last climax of the discussion was reached when Star Citizen sold land in space.
Star Citizen speaks out
This is what Star Citizen says: The company behind Star Citizen, CIG, has commented on the story, providing two statements to the website MassivelyOp.
On the one hand, they explain that they lifted the general money cap in the context of the game’s development but replaced it with a daily cap.
This was a development decision, actually a significant milestone, and had nothing to do with marketing or sales.
Furthermore, it says:
“Pay to Win” – What does “winning” even mean in Star Citizen? We have challenges and gameplay for everyone, from the solo player flying an Aurora to huge crews operating an Idris together. We are developing a space simulation. I don’t know how one could win that. That’s the real idea: you play how you want to play.
In WoW or EVE players also have an advantage
It continues: You can buy better stats or skills with money, but not magic balls that kill everything. Everything that can be bought with real money can also be earned in Star Citizen.
By allowing players to buy ships or in-game money, you enable them to support the project. Every online game has some form of imbalance. Anyone starting WoW or EVE today also faces a disadvantage compared to veterans.
