With the upcoming update to version Alpha 2.7, the universe of the MMORPG Star Citizen will be expanded.
Currently, many players are enjoying version 2.4 of the online game, which introduced persistence into the game world. This means that, for example, damage to ships will persist, and players can equip their characters with gear that will remain with them. Furthermore, work is already in progress on additional updates.
The first star system is nearing completion
According to Cloud Imperium founder Chris Roberts, the focus is currently on finalizing the Stanton star system. A star system spanning several billion kilometers is being built around the gas giant Crusader. In order for the Cryengine to render such a large area filled with objects, some adjustments had to be made to the graphics framework. This includes the CryNetwork (the object management system of the CryEngine), which had to be completely rewritten.
While a new pirate base is being prepared for update 2.5, which serves as a hideout for criminals, update 2.7 will introduce procedurally generated planets into the game. These will populate the Stanton system. Among these planets is the already known ArcCorp, which will also be transferred to a procedural system. It will then be possible to transition seamlessly between space and planets.
Work is progressing
Additionally, work is already underway with Nyx on the next star system. However, it is still unclear whether Nyx will also be introduced with update 2.7. They also announced that they will only address the cargo and mining systems once the Stanton system is completed. No release date for update 2.7 for Star Citizen has been set yet.
