The SF-MMO Star Citizen switched engines before Christmas, in the future, it will rely on Amazon. Also, the patch 2.6 has been released.
And the patch 2.6 with Star Marine is also out …
In time for the holidays, Star Citizen wants to give its fans something to do and has released patch 2.6. It had been on the test server for a while. Alpha 2.6 brings the shooter module Star Marine.
With patch 2.6, they are also officially switching engines and announcing it. Until now, Star Citizen relied on a heavily modified version of Crytek’s CryEngine. The work on the engine will now be carried over to the new engine, Amazon’s Lumberyard, it is said. Lumberyard is also based on CryEngine and has been heavily modified.
Cloud Imperium Games, the company behind Star Citizen, reportedly negotiated with Amazon last year. 2.6 is already running on Lumberyard. CIG is a licensee of this engine.
New engine Lumberyard is supposed to help reach millions of fans on Twitch
According to the head of Star Citizen, Chris Roberts, CIG has been working with Amazon for over a year. Lumberyard offers the innovative technology for online games that they have been looking for. Lumberyard brings, among other things, cloud integration and the ability to integrate Twitch and connect with millions of players worldwide. They share a common technical vision with Amazon. Roberts refers to them as “Technology Leader.”
Amazon returns the favor, calling Star Citizen and Squadron 42 incredibly ambitious. Emphasizes how much the games could benefit from the “power of the cloud.” Amazon loves the bold vision of Star Citizen, which has already inspired a huge community, according to the statement.

Crytek, the makers of the old engine, recently ran into financial trouble and had to divest studios worldwide. Roberts stated that they are independent of Crytek. Apparently, this independence is even more profound than expected.

Amazon is also entering the gaming market, recently presenting three games that all seem to be designed for streaming on Twitch. Breakaway recently premiered. However, the attention of MMO fans is likely to be on “New World.”
