CIG, the company behind Star Citizen, has apologized to players for the launch of Alpha 3.18: Lasting Legacies. They stated that they knew this ‘important milestone’ of the project would present some difficulties. However, how it played out in practice was unacceptable.
This is how Star Citizen apologizes: In the company’s weekly blog post, there is a clear apology from CIG for the catastrophic launch of patch 3.18 (via RSI).
The company says they knew a live release of the feature ‘Persistent Entity Streaming’ was necessary to see how the milestone feature would work at the scale of a live setting. Since the release on Friday, March 10, hundreds of thousands of players have checked in. However, many of them encountered issues that prevented them from logging in, and those players who could log into Star Citizen experienced a ‘less than ideal gaming experience.’
First of all, we want to apologize for the turbulence and frustration many of you have experienced since the release. Although we anticipated some initial hiccups and tried to set expectations accordingly, it is still unacceptable for us that so many of you were unable to enjoy 3.18 properly.
Please note that we are working hard to resolve the remaining issues and we are working to get things up and running as quickly as possible. While we are already seeing improvements in many areas, there is still work to be done – and the right people are working on it.
It was supposed to be a formidable weekend, but there were many issues. Here’s what’s in the patch:
‘Embarrassingly bad – even by Star Citizen standards’
What kind of problems occurred? If you look at the forum and the game’s reddit, you read that some people have tried for hours to log into Star Citizen.
A player says: After dozens of attempts to log in, he got through once but then could not interact with anything in the game for 10 minutes. The terminals worked, the missions did not respond. And then he crashed out of the game again. That was ’embarrassingly bad – even for Star Citizen standards.’
But for a hardcore fan, that doesn’t deter them. The site PC Gamer quotes a player who says: ‘I am a backer from day one. I am not going anywhere.’
‘The patch has so much content – I am looking forward to it’
Other players even see the positive side in the bad release: ‘The people who are complaining now that they can’t play do not realize that there are so many bugs only because CIG released a patch with so much content. I am looking forward to it.’
Indeed, patch 3.18 was a big update, also because fans have been waiting for it so long. 11 months after 3.17, the patch has now arrived – the Alpha 3.18 was originally announced for 2022.
