The gamescom is traditionally an event to discover new games. However, in 2022, streamers and influencers were primarily in the spotlight, and not always in a positive way. A significant discussion is currently ongoing around the famous Twitch streamer Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris.
The gamescom 2022 made waves with news, scandals, and issues surrounding Twitch streamers:
- Dance ban and Orangemorage got into a dispute with physical assaults.
- The two were allowed back to the fair after a brief ban and immediately caused further scandals.
- The German streamer MontanaBlack even gained international attention, among others from the largest streamer on Twitch, Félix “xQc” Lengyel.
- MontanaBlack even streamed his walk through the fair live and reached over 100,000 viewers at peak (via sullygnome).
However, there is now a significant discussion surrounding the famous “Monte.” More specifically: about his fans who wanted to meet him at gamescom. They caused considerable unrest.
What has the community done? The streamer GameGecki shared on Twitter a summary of his experiences at gamescom. According to him, several incidents occurred due to MontanaBlack fans:
- Violence against homosexual couples
- Rough pushing and driving away people waiting in line for games
- Jumping on displayed cars
- Climbing over barriers
- The security forces did not prevent any of this, but only protected MontanaBlack himself
GameGecki requested his money back from the Kölnmesse for the last day, as it had become impossible to test anything at all. As soon as he heard the crowd of fans announcing themselves with loud “Monte” calls, he fled.
The tweet went viral in no time. The well-known German streamer Gnu confirmed in a tweet that violence occurred. Her colleague was thrown to the ground, and two security staff were injured.
Even the head of gamescom himself, Christian Baur, spoke out and stated that there is no place for violence at gamescom:
“We take the incidents very seriously”
This is what the organizers say: MeinMMO directly asked for a statement from gamescom.
It is particularly important to us that everyone feels safe and comfortable at gamescom. Therefore, we take the incidents surrounding MontanaBlack’s visit to gamescom as well as all other reported incidents very seriously and will analyze them closely. At gamescom, reckless behavior, intolerance, and violence have no place.
The organizers in a statement to MeinMMO
MeinMMO has also gathered a statement from the organizers regarding the scandals surrounding the Twitch streamers Tanzverbot, Orangemorange, and Scurrow.
The head of marketing and communication at Xbox in Germany, Maxi Gräff, already noted in a tweet that she did not want to attend such a gamescom as 2022 next year.
Several employees of gamescom emphasized after the incidents that they want to look more closely at the situation. We will keep you updated as soon as we know whether and what measures will be taken next year.
The development is particularly unfortunate because the fair had a lot to offer from the perspective of games and presentations:
The gamescom 2022 was much better for me than everyone had feared before
