With Splitgate, the developer studio 1047 Games was able to achieve a surprise success in the shooter market in 2019. Now they have announced a sequel.
After a countdown was running on the official website of the arena shooter Splitgate in the past days and hours, the developers have now addressed the players with a big announcement:
Splitgate 2 is coming in 2025 for Steam, Epic, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S
There is already a Steam shop page where you can see initial images and a trailer:
What is Splitgate? Splitgate is an arena shooter that started as an underdog in 2019 and quickly became very popular among fans of the genre. There are a variety of different modes, such as team deathmatch and zone capture. Overall, however, the game modes are more objective-oriented.
The gameplay of Splitgate 1 is very reminiscent of Halo, but the game principle has a special twist: You can create portals through which you can travel, shoot, or look through. This brought a special tactical element to the shooter. For example, it was possible to flank opponents with the portals or to open a portal behind them and shoot them in the back without leaving your own position.
Splitgate 2 is also supposed to feature portals as a main feature again. 4v4 matches (PvP) will be played. Additionally, you should be able to customize your weapons and choose factions. It is currently unknown whether there will be any other differences from Splitgate 1.
How has Splitgate been doing lately? In September 2022, the developers announced that they would no longer work on Splitgate 1, although the servers would continue to run (via splitgate.com).
Splitgate lost a large part of its player base on Steam years ago (via Steamcharts). Since September 2022, the shooter has not exceeded 1,000 simultaneous active players on Steam. Since September 2021, Splitgate has not had more than 10,000 players.
Splitgate 2 will be one of the shooters to keep an eye on in 2025. The PvP-oriented portal gameplay of its predecessor remains unparalleled to this day. If the implementation is successful, it could become a candidate for the 25 best shooters.
