Good games don’t always have to come from abroad. We present to you 10 multiplayer games from German developers.

Portal Knights
Portal Knights is inspired by Minecraft and won the German Computer Game Award in 2017. Additionally, it has a high Steam rating. Portal Knights focuses on sandbox and combat. We choose from 3 classes, can craft equipment, and skill our character.
The world consists of numerous small flying islands, which are connected by portals activated by us. Throughout the game, we explore these islands alone or in co-op, experience boss fights, and build our home city.
Anno
Anno is one of the few games that don’t want to rush us. We calmly build a small settlement, expand across multiple islands, and set up increasingly complex production chains. Several installments have already won the award.
In doing so, the series continually tries to introduce something new. With Anno 1404, a second nation was introduced for the first time, making the construction of perfect transport routes even more challenging. Anno 2070 takes us into the future and 2205 even to the moon. With Anno 1800, Ubisoft wants to return to its roots.
Settlers
Peaceful city-building strategy, we just had that. It’s also from the same publisher and partly from the same developer as Anno. But we settle not on different islands, but only in one area.
We watch as the forester plants trees that are cut down by the lumberjack and then processed into planks. But only if we take care that the necessary tools are forged beforehand; otherwise, everyone will soon be out of work. The busy factor is immense. It’s fun to watch the people at their work.
Spellforce
Spellforce combines the RPG and real-time strategy genres. We play a group of heroes, which we can skill as tanks, healers, or DD, and like in a classic role-playing game, we lead dialogues and complete quests.
Additionally, we can build buildings on the maps, and this is where the strategy part begins. We mine resources, train troops, and fight together against the opponent. Just recently, the third part from THQ Nordic from Austria was released.
Patrician
Germany is known for its economic simulations. In the Patrician series, we play during the time of the Hanseatic League, trading between cities, setting up businesses, and rising in rank.
The entire consumption of goods is simulated, so in winter, hardly any grain is produced, and other products are in demand. If we build residential houses and offer jobs, demand and consumption rise. Everything is interconnected. If we can’t keep up with salt production, meat production suffers as a result. And if cities lack food, we experience a famine.
Albion Online
The buy-to-play game Albion Online wants to offer us complete freedom and was especially popular abroad, leading to long waiting lines at release. The heart of the game is the destiny board, a kind of skill tree. The more we pursue a task, the better we become at it. Thus, it is possible to improve by gathering resources and to collect and process increasingly valuable materials.
Housing plays a significant role; we can even acquire our own island. Afterwards, we employ NPC workers in our home and can place some furniture to increase the satisfaction of the helpers. You can find more information in our test of Albion Online.
Tibia
Tibia has existed for over 20 years and is considered a classic among MMORPGs. It is played from an isometric perspective and is reminiscent of Ultima Online. It has a loyal fan base, with thousands of players still online simultaneously today.
The gameplay is well-known. We have different classes to choose from, explore a fantasy world, fight enemies, and improve our class step by step. The MMORPG is free to play in the browser. Only in 2016 was the last secret of Tibia unveiled.
Battle Worlds: Kronos
Battle Worlds: Kronos is a hex-based turn-based strategy game of the old school, with inspirations from classics like Advance Wars and Panzer General. Two factions with over 40 different infantry, ground, marine, and air units are waiting for our command.
In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, numerous exciting multiplayer battles await us. Either live or asynchronously, during which we can take our time in planning between turns.
Ryse: Son of Rome
The renowned developer Crytek released the graphics monster Ryse: Son of Rome and showed what is possible on the new consoles. A PC port followed later.
We play as a Roman soldier during the time of Emperor Nero. A political intrigue leads to the loss of our family; we seek revenge and retribution and engage in gladiatorial and boss fights.
Blobby Volley
This small game still finds its place in player hearts and on Twitch today. A type of 2D volleyball with only one player per side. The goal is for the ball to touch the ground on the opponent’s side.
