Everyone has probably imagined what it would be like if a zombie apocalypse were to start right now. In a new game on Steam, you can find out how you and your neighbors would likely behave.
What kind of game is this? The game Infection Free Zone is a mix of city builder, frost punk, and survival game and belongs to the small genre of operator games on Steam.
In operator games, you are like a dispatcher responsible for managing different units simultaneously and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Most of these games become increasingly stressful and require good coordination.
In Infection Free Zone, you also need to coordinate your units well. While your military units go out to scavenge for resources during the day, your civilian units convert abandoned buildings into living or storage spaces.
Over time, you meet more survivors that you can take in to grow your community. But beware: More people also need more food, which has to be scavenged as well.

You can play in your own neighborhood
What makes the game special? In Infection Free Zone, you don’t play on just any map, but in the real world. At the beginning of the game, you select a location in the real world, from which the actual buildings are brought into the game via map data. So you can play in your neighborhood, in your favorite city, or at another location of your choice.
Almost any place in the world is possible, as long as it has a name. The publisher of the game, Games Operator, has already implemented this system in other operator games. From our tests, we know it is not always 100% accurate, but it works quite well even in small towns and villages.
How are players responding to the game? Players appreciate the idea and execution of their own cities, but especially the current version in early access receives criticism. The balancing and lack of depth in the game are repeatedly mentioned in negative reviews on Steam. The game currently has a balanced rating with 67% positive reviews from over 3,500 votes.
