The term “Battle Royale” has become overused, as it seems like every other game integrates such a mode and advertises it. However, Spellbreak aims to bring a breath of fresh air to this area.
Battle Royale usually takes place in a contemporary or slightly futuristic setting, see PUBG, Fortnite or Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. But in Spellbreak, you are in a colorful fantasy setting.
Battle Royale with Spells
What is Spellbreak? Essentially, Spellbreak plays out like a regular battle royale shooter. You fight on a constantly shrinking battlefield against other players until only one player remains. However, Spellbreak offers some unique features:
- You are in a colorful fantasy setting with comic graphics.
- Before the start of a match, you choose one of eleven classes for your hero.
- The classes determine which gloves you can wear. Each glove can cast a different spell.
- You can combine two gloves.
- Each glove has a primary and a secondary attack.
- Each class has a unique passive ability and can be improved during the match through scrolls.
- The combination of spells, gloves, and upgrades should make the battles unpredictable and tactical.
Tactical Combinations
What powers do the spells provide? It is important that you choose a good combination of spells. Effects include:
- Fire damage
- Ice spells
- Lightning
- Stone attacks
- Poison clouds
It is possible to combine spells depending on your class and the gloves chosen. For example, you can create a poison gas cloud and then ignite it with a fire spell, resulting in a poison gas-fire inferno. Additionally, the effects interact with each other.
If a player, for example, creates an ice surface on the ground, they will move faster over it. However, another player can electrify the ice with lightning, causing damage to all those who want to use the ice path.
This is how players react: Although battle royale fatigue is slowly spreading, the attitude towards Spellbreak is quite positive:
For instance, mao_dze_dun on PCGamer states: “Finally a battle royale that interests me. However, I hope that other game modes will also be introduced.”
SpicyFOX explains: “I’m not really a fan of battle royale… but this could change my mind!”
This is how you participate: Spellbreak is currently in the pre-alpha phase. By purchasing one of the founder packs, you can already play and give feedback to the developers. When the beta starts or when the official release takes place is currently still undecided.
