In the survival MMO Atlas, everything revolves around the pirate era. Epic ship battles, forming a crew, and treasure hunting are the focus for many players. There is no trace of highly advanced technology. That will change soon.
Pirates and technology? In the first dev stream, the developers showcased a concept for a submarine. Pirates and fantasy are usually at the forefront of the survival MMO. The black powder weapons and cannons are already the most advanced things Atlas has to offer. A submarine seems out of place for the actual setting.
Grapeshot Games explains: Another civilization is said to have already existed in the world of Atlas before the pirates. They were technologically more advanced. The so-called Golden Age also brought the submarine in a steampunk design. Additional technologies are not out of the question.
However, the submarine is not intended for combat. It is unarmed and serves only for exploring the upcoming underwater world, including dungeons and other sights. The developers do not want to pursue the same path as with the TEK updates in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Creative Director Jesse Rapczak commented on the stream:
We respect the world of Atlas and the pirate setting. You shouldn’t imagine it as the TEK updates in Ark, but more like steampunk.
The TEK updates in ARK have continually brought more futuristic items into the game. Like laser weapons for dinosaurs or combat suits in the style of the Power Rangers.
This is how the community reacts: There was a lively discussion in the Twitch chat. User IanWPG says: “I love this game. But if it turns into a TEK fashion show, I’m out.”
How you will get these technical gadgets is still unknown. The developers have mentioned quests and dungeons, but haven’t elaborated on them in detail. These features are still too far in the future.
The update that will bring the submarine to the survival MMO is already planned for February.
