In September, all players have the chance to get their first impression of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – as part of the beta. While not much is known about the content so far, a new detail has emerged that should please many players.
This is the detail regarding the beta: In the latest podcast from GameInformer, developers from Infinity Ward discussed Modern Warfare 2019 and also answered some community questions.
Among other things, questions were asked about the largest mode of Modern Warfare so far: Ground War. Up to 100 players or even more are planned, along with the use of vehicles and technology – and it is not a Battle Royale.
What will likely please many fans: In one of their responses, the developers confirmed that Ground War will be part of the upcoming Modern Warfare beta. After experiencing the fast-paced 2vs2 battles of the Gunfight mode in the Alpha (which is coming back in the beta), players will also be able to test the largest multiplayer format of Modern Warfare 2019 in the beta.
When does the Modern Warfare beta take place? The beta of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be held in September. It will occur in two phases:
- The first test phase runs from September 12 to 16. This phase is only accessible to PS4 players – from September 12 to 13 for players with early access and from September 14 to 16 for all interested PS4 players.
- The second phase runs from September 19 to 23 and is open to players on all platforms. From September 19 to 20, only players with early access can participate. From September 21 to 23, all interested players on all platforms can join.

What we know so far about Ground War:
- Ground War is a larger variation of the Domination mode. It is a traditional multiplayer format in a new scale – not a Battle Royale like Blackout from Black Ops 4. Thus, it is the largest mode for the standard multiplayer of the entire “Call of Duty” series.
- Two teams fight with handguns as well as controllable tanks, troop transports, or helicopters on a large map for control points in the form of flags that need to be captured.
- The Ground War maps are larger than the regular maps. They are said to be the largest maps in the history of Call of Duty.
- Currently, they are experimenting with 40-64 players. On a larger map, they have already tested 100 or more players. They are still looking for the optimal balance. The final player count will depend, among other things, on the size of the map and the number of control points.
- Games will be played with the regular multiplayer loadout – that is, weapons with attachments and perks.
- In this mode, players will also be able to use killstreaks like the Juggernaut.

In a way, this format almost resembles Battlefield, which is why a former manager from Battlefield already warned EA: CoD Modern Warfare will be a big competitor
In what form will Ground War be playable in the beta? The developers have not commented on this so far. In previous presentations and play sessions, the formats 20vs20 and 32vs32 have been used. Although Activision aims to allow 100 players or more in Ground War, it is uncertain whether such a scale will be tested in the beta.
What do you think about this news? Are you excited to try out this new mode? Or do you think such a large format has no appeal to Call of Duty?
