Sony’s DualSense Edge is a great upgrade and pro controller for the PS5 if you really need it

Practical test with games

During my test period, I tested the pro controller for the PS5 with three games:

  • Gran Turismo 7
  • GodFall
  • Deathloop

I will briefly present my experiences and settings.

Gran Turismo 7 (Racing Game)

Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing games on the PS5. Here I took the opportunity to assign the acceleration button to the right paddle. I find this significantly more relaxing than having to constantly press the trigger button to accelerate.

Otherwise, the racing game does not feel much different than if I were playing with the usual DualSense.

GodFall (Action RPG)

GodFall is an action RPG with a loot spiral and exclusively focuses on melee weapons. On the DualSense controller, the battles feel pleasantly hefty. I made some adjustments on the DualSense Edge:

  • Shortened the right trigger (R2).
  • Assigned the blocking ability to the right paddle.
  • Assigned the function “Weapon Technique” to the left paddle.

In particular, the weapon technique on the left paddle proves to be quite helpful regularly. Other buttons, like light or heavy attacks, fail to fit due to my fingers. Because they are just too used to the old configuration.

Deathloop (First-Person Shooter)

In Deathloop, you try to break free from a death spiral and eliminate your opponents with weapons and various gadgets. I also configured the DualSense Edge for this:

  • Shortened the right trigger (R2).
  • Assigned the function “Sprint” to the left paddle.
  • Assigned the function “Aim” to the right paddle.
  • Additionally, I am using one of the two low round caps on the left stick.

Thanks to the adjustable paddles, I can react much faster to enemies, and the shortened trigger allows me to fire weapons faster, as I do not have to press the trigger as deeply.

In the shooter, I find all the features helpful and have already saved Colt’s butt more than once, especially when an enemy surprises me.

In these situations, the DualSense Edge can really showcase its strengths, and in some heated gunfights, I do not want to miss the new features anymore.

Impression of the DualSense Edge while Gaming

My impression: The paddles, customizable buttons, and adjustable triggers are quite helpful in many situations and continually ease my gaming experience. However, it is also possible to play all games without these features.

Especially in the first-person shooter Deathloop, I benefit from the new features, while Gran Turismo feels more or less the same.

Previously, some criticized that the DualSense Edge only offers 2 paddles on the back compared to the SCUF. For my use cases, shooters and action RPGs, that has been sufficient. However, this may be too little for some gamers in the long run.

Otherwise, the Edge does not feel much different from the regular DualSense – just with additional features.

Conclusion

For whom is the DualSense Edge worth it? The DualSense Edge is a high-quality controller that you can fully adapt and configure to your own needs. And this is also where the controller’s strengths lie:

  • The software is intuitive and easy to understand.
  • Stick modules and paddles can be quickly installed or replaced.
  • Thanks to intuitive software, configurations or profiles can be quickly changed even in the middle of a game.
  • You can really customize everything on the controller from stick sensitivity to the trigger dead zones.

Anyone looking for such a customizable controller will definitely find it with the DualSense Edge, and here you get a truly recommendable controller with numerous features. The price of 239.99 euros is also justified, as it is within the range of competitors. The accessories also appear high-quality and round off the positive impression.

Paddles are especially popular among competitive players, as they can save milliseconds that can secure your survival. As a casual player, they are practical but not necessarily essential.

Therefore, if you are “just” a casual player, the regular DualSense is still the better choice for you, as the Edge is still “just” a DualSense with the same symmetrical layout and haptics, but with important and long-demanded functions.

What alternatives are there?

  • The SCUF Reflex is the best-known alternative to the DualSense Edge and costs 249.99 euros. You can also customize the controller further, but that comes at an extra cost. Additionally, the SCUF offers you 4 paddles on the back, which is 2 more than the DualSense Edge.
  • The Aim Controller is a bit cheaper at 229.99 euros and also offers additional options that cost extra.
  • The Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is currently the most expensive controller for the PS5 at 299.99 euros, but it also offers paddles and RGB options. There are no additional options for an extra charge.

Summary
Written by

Good
  • jede Menge Zubehör
  • Ergonomie des normalen DualSense
  • wirklich alles für persönliche Vorlieben einstellbar
  • kompatibel mit Ladestation
  • intuitives Interface auf der PS5
  • Haptisches Feedback und adaptive Trigger
Bad
  • hoher Preis
  • kein Stick-Modul im Lieferumfang
  • höheres Gewicht als der DualSense
