In the future, there will likely be slower download speeds for PlayStation players. Sony announced the measure due to the current situation.
This is what Sony announced: As officially stated on the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation players will have to expect slightly longer waiting times for downloads from now on. This is because video games are currently an important means of connecting friends and families – and are consequently in high demand.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with internet providers across Europe to manage the increased download traffic and secure access for the entire internet community.

They want to contribute to overall internet stability, “as an unprecedented number of people” are currently practicing social distancing and relying on stable internet. Therefore, there may be “slower or delayed downloads”.
Gameplay should remain stable
What does this mean for multiplayer games? Currently, it seems that the slower speeds only affect downloads. “The gameplay remains strong,” Sony explicitly writes in the announcement.
So it seems they are initially focusing on the download part of online gaming to minimize disruption to the gaming experience: “We appreciate the support and understanding of our community, as well as their contribution – that’s why we are doing everything to ensure access for all of you,” the statement reads.
