In an interview, Sony spoke about the graphics performance of the next-gen PlayStation – the “PlayStation 5”. 120 Hz at a 4K resolution is possible. We show you what this means for you.
What’s new about the PS5? In an interview with CNET, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan talked about the performance of the next PlayStation console. The name of the console is not yet confirmed, so we will refer to it as PS5 in this article.
Ryan mentioned that the new SSD hard drive is included even in the standard version of the PS5. Thus, buyers of this edition already enjoy the shortened loading times of the PlayStation 5.
Regarding the graphics performance, he added that the PS5 achieves a “4K resolution at 120 Hz”. In comparison to the PS4, this is a significant improvement, which only reached a maximum of 60 Hz at a 1080p resolution.
What does the graphics performance of 4K at 120 Hz mean for you?
What does 120 Hz actually mean? The abbreviation Hertz describes a frequency. In this case, the refresh rate of the image. That is, how many images per second can be sent to a display device such as a television or monitor.

In order for this number of images to be transmitted, the console must also be able to calculate 120 FPS, meaning frames per second. Thus, achieving 120 Hz at 4K describes the maximum performance.
Simplified, 4K and 120 Hz describe what can be achieved with an HDMI port using the “2.1” technology (7680 x 4320p @ 60 Hz, 3840 x 2160p @120 Hz [3D]). According to Jim Ryan, the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1.
What do higher Hz values mean for you? If the PlayStation 5 can achieve 120 FPS in 4K resolution in games, then these can be transmitted to the television. For you, more FPS and Hz mean a smoother image than just with 60 Hz or less.
Due to the higher frequency synchronization between the television and the console, you will see a smoother image on the screen. This is well illustrated by the following video.
Will all games reach 120 FPS at 4K? This is not to be expected. This would require an enormous graphics performance. It is already known that a custom version of AMD’s Radeon Navi is integrated into the PS5.
It is said to be slightly stronger than the current Nvidia RTX 2070. It is unlikely that the graphics card of the PS5 will achieve such high FPS values at a 4K resolution.

It could be possible if games are completely optimized and adapted for the PS5. Additionally, compromises may have to be made on graphical details to reach peak performance.
