In a blog post, Sony presented the games with the most downloads and the most successful Free2Play games on the consoles PS4 and PS5. It is notable that online games dominate. Additionally, there are a few evergreen titles on the list that have actually been out for years.
What are these lists? In a blog post on PlayStation.com, Sony revealed the 20 paid games with the most downloads for PS4, the most downloads for PS5, and the most commonly used Free2Play games for both consoles.
For this article, we restrict ourselves to the data from Europe. Sony’s list also includes data from America. Players from Asia, Australia, or Africa were not considered.
The most popular paid games on PS4/PS5
This is what the list looks like for PS5:
- FIFA 22
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- FIFA 21
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Battlefield 2042
- Among Us
- Kena: Bridge of Spirits
- Far Cry 6
- It Takes Two
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- F1 2021
- Resident Evil Village
- NBA 2K22
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Rainbow Six: Siege
- Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
- Diablo II: Resurrected
- DEATHLOOP
- Mortal Kombat 11
What is striking? FIFA occupies ranks 1 and 3 in the PS5 game ranking. Additionally, the top 5 include two shooters, Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042, both of which have faced significant criticism since their release. In fact, the mood around Battlefield is so poor that the subreddit is threatened with closure.
Moreover, the top 10 is almost exclusively occupied by multiplayer online games. Only ranks 4, 7, and 10 feature single-player games. Further down, we see two more online shooters with CoD: Black Ops Cold War and Rainbow Six Siege.
Among Us also celebrated its release in December 2021 and made a lightning start into the top 6.
This is what it looks like for PS4:
- FIFA 22
- GTA 5
- Minecraft
- FIFA 21
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- The Crew 2
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- The Forest
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Gran Turismo Sport
- ARK: Survival Evolved
- Need for Speed Heat
- NBA 2K21
- Gang Beasts
- Rainbow Six: Siege
- eFootball PES 2021 SEASON UPDATE
- Among Us
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
What is striking? FIFA 22 and FIFA 21 are also very popular on PS4. Additionally, GTA 5 and Minecraft make it into the top 5, even though they have actually been out for years. The Witcher 3 is also considered an old title that has made its way back into the charts.
Overall, online games dominate the PS4 ranking. Offline games only hold ranks 7, 8, and 10. Later, more online games such as Fall Guys, ARK, Rainbow Six: Siege, and Among Us come in.
Free2Play charts dominated by the usual suspects
Which Free2Play games are downloaded the most? For the free games, Sony has only released one list for PS4 and PS5 combined, which contains only 10 games:
- Fortnite
- Rocket League
- Call of Duty: Warzone
- eFootball 2022
- Genshin Impact
- Apex Legends
- eFootball PES 2021 LITE
- Brawlhalla
- Destiny 2
- Splitgate
The only surprises here are probably the high ranking of eFootball PES 2021, which is currently the lowest-rated game on Steam, and Splitgate at rank 10. The shooter was released in 2021 and initially achieved really good player numbers on Steam. However, these dropped significantly after a few weeks. Overall, it seems to have gone well for Splitgate on PlayStation.
What do you think about the ranking? Did you expect these placements or are there any big surprises for you? Feel free to write it in the comments.
