Sony has announced that on December 31, 2023, it will delete several series from the PlayStation, even if you have purchased them. This is likely due to an expiring licensing agreement.
Sony has announced that certain series and movies that players have purchased via PlayStation will be deleted from your library. The problem is not Sony, but the rights holder Warner Bros, who is behind this.
Warner Bros merges services, does not renew its rights
Warner Bros. recently merged Discovery and HBO Max into “Max.” This also changes rights and especially agreements that manufacturers have made with Warner Bros. For this reason, many suspect that the rights for PlayStation for the series are expiring and will not be renewed. Sony itself states (via forbes.com):
Due to our licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch previously purchased Discovery content, and the content will be removed from your video library.
However, it remains unclear whether Sony is to “blame” for the deletion or if the problem lies directly with WB: Because it is quite possible that WB simply demanded a too high licensing fee from Sony to renew the licenses.
Basically, you should be aware that if you buy series or movies on the PS5 or generally digitally on a platform, then it can happen (as in this case) that the purchased items are deleted, even though you have paid for them. This also applies to Amazon or other digital retailers that also offer such a purchase service.
Which series will be deleted or disappear? On PlayStation, you can view a list of content that will be deleted. If you have not actively purchased series from the Discovery service, you are probably not affected.
When will the content be deleted? On December 31, 2023, the content will be removed from the PlayStation platform. This affects both PS4 and PS5.
That’s why you shouldn’t stream on PS4 or PS5: The PS5 is not exactly the best place to stream or purchase series and movies. Your console will cost you more money when streaming than a TV or a TV stick:
